National Grid is hiring a Data Scientist for Customer Connections in Waltham, MA. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to our locations. National Grid is committed to enabling a clean, fair, and affordable energy transition. We connect tens of thousands of new electric and gas services each year, including upgrades to services that are hosting distributed energy resource (DER) applications that add renewable energy, energy storage, and other clean technologies onto the utility grid. Supporting the Connections & Strategic Accounts departments in New York and Massachusetts, this position will join the Customer Connections Process & Systems team focused on user experience (UX), data integrity, process improvement, and innovation with a vision to provide a best-in-class customer connection experience. This position will implement technical solutions and other improvements that optimize data integrity, security, accessibility, and visualizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives to automate processes, including translating outdated processes into Python scripts, creating bots that complete routine or repetitive tasks, and participating in projects to train or create generative AI agents and other tools.
  • Develop training curriculum and facilitate professional development of team members regarding data science, data visualization, and data security tools and techniques.
  • Collaborate with IT and Architecture to set the strategy for data interfaces and dataflows to/from other IT systems at National Grid to meet and enhance business needs.
  • Create, customize, and implement data integrity tools that incorporate visual management, error proofing, and data validation techniques to prevent and identify process and automation breakdowns.
  • Analyze connection application trends, performance, operational, and billing data to communicate insights through visual formats for informed decision-making.
  • Troubleshoot records, data fields, and associated meta-data to identify interface, automation, and user errors.
  • Review and analyze legacy data, leading efforts to refine and clean anomalies and missing data using automation where feasible.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of key business processes, customer needs, and utility regulations to identify potential enhancement requests.
  • Collaborate with leaders, subject matter experts, customers, and team members to identify improvements for performance, user experience, and data accuracy.
  • Perform routine administrative tasks to ensure appropriate user access, data integrity, and a positive user experience.
  • Assist team members with ad hoc process improvement, automation, and IT enhancement projects.

Requirements

  • Master's degree with at least 2 years of professional work experience OR Bachelor's degree with at least 4 years of professional work experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in engineering, computer science, data science, or data-based visual management, preferably in an agile IT environment.
  • Strong understanding of visual management techniques and digital data visualization best practices, with familiarity with Power BI.
  • Experience and familiarity with macros, Visual Basic, SQL, or other advanced database and Excel functionalities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze large data sets, with a preference for familiarity with Python.
  • Ability to write clear, detailed, and precise process instructions including technical jargon.
  • Ability to remain calm during high-stress situations and set clear expectations.
  • Experience with SQL, Power BI, and/or Python is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 tools is required.
  • Experience or familiarity with Salesforce and JIRA is preferred.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in computer programming and analysis, including understanding code and data anomalies.
  • Ability to quickly learn and communicate complex processes or policies to diverse audiences.
  • Enthusiasm for sustainability, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean energy technologies.

  • Master's degree with relevant experience or Bachelor's degree with relevant experience.

  • Salary range of $101,000 - $119,000 per year, commensurate with location and experience.
