About the Role

The Online Data Stores organization offers high-leverage managed datastores and abstractions at scale to meet Netflix's operational data requirements across all lines of business. The team focuses on developing and maintaining high-performance, reliable, and efficient datastores, including Caching, Relational, Search, Key-Value, and Composite abstractions, and enhancing developer productivity through secure, intuitive access layers. The Engineering Manager will lead the Caching pod, a team of nine engineers providing caching as a centralized managed service powering critical Tier 0 services at Netflix, with a focus on feature development, reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner to deliver the vision, strategy, and adoption of current and future technologies in the space of online caching datastores.
  • Build, scale, and grow a team of outstanding engineers, challenging them to bring their best selves to work every day, and deliver industry-leading results in stability, performance, and efficiency.
  • Balance smart risks, investment in foundational technical work, paying off tech debt, and incremental improvements to deliver timely results across multiple critical strategies.
  • Ensure the delivery of reliable, scalable, and intuitive data solutions that meet critical business needs.
  • Oversee the development, deployment, and maintenance of Tier 0 systems, ensuring high availability, rapid response times, and minimal operational overhead.
  • Leverage deep domain expertise in distributed systems and infrastructure to guide work across critical domains.
  • Influence strategy and decision-making beyond immediate teams, driving organizational success.

Requirements

  • An experienced engineering leader capable of driving a team of talented, geographically distributed engineers and building strong partnerships with peers and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in building and running extremely reliable distributed platform systems supporting high-scale and critical Tier 0 workloads, including managing a 24x7 on-call rotation and ensuring 99.95+% availability.
  • Ability to facilitate technical strategy trade-offs and understand the big picture to shape product development.
  • Deep expertise in platform and distributed systems, especially in supporting high-availability, high-performance systems.
  • Ability to positively influence teams through curiosity and informed opinions, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Proven track record of helping teams deliver timely results on critical priorities amidst numerous demands.
  • Experience in maintaining high talent density through coaching and mentoring, with exposure to growth and critical conversations.
  • Experience in building and leading inclusive teams focused on diversity and retention.
  • Ability to align technical initiatives with business needs and deliver high-impact results in critical areas.
  • Deep domain expertise in Tier 0 products and the ability to influence strategic thinking beyond immediate teams.
  • Skilled in making strategic decisions and communicating effectively with stakeholders.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AWS and multi-region cache replication.
  • Contributions to industry conferences or publications related to distributed systems and data stores.

  • Educational background or experience supporting leadership in distributed systems and high-scale data stores.

  • Compensation structure based on annual salary and stock options, with a market-based range of $190,000 - $920,000.
