About the Role

Position Summary... As a Staff Software Engineer at Walmart, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing digital solutions that address mission-critical business challenges and support Walmart associates worldwide. The role involves pioneering cutting-edge technology that combines mobile data and AI to revolutionize the associate experience, impacting more than 2 million users globally. You will work within the Enterprise People Technology team, which drives the deployment and adoption of new People technologies across the enterprise, empowering managers and associates to focus on serving customers and members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams-including business, product, and engineering-to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Design, build, test, and deploy reliable, high-performance backend microservices and systems in a cloud-native environment.
  • Contribute to data platform and integration initiatives, ensuring seamless data flow and consistency across services.
  • Participate in design and code reviews, driving best practices for quality, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • Own and deliver large-scale, distributed backend systems that meet performance and availability goals.
  • Collaborate across the stack when needed, and help shape architecture and technical direction for the team.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience building scalable, reliable backend systems in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, with a solid grasp of microservices architecture.
  • Experience with event-driven systems, particularly Kafka.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases, such as Cosmos DB, and relational data stores.
  • Proven experience owning features end-to-end—from design and development to deployment and monitoring.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and operational excellence best practices.
  • Comfort working in a cloud-native environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed trade-offs between speed and quality.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work effectively with product managers, designers, and other engineers.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with front-end development.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and experience creating inclusive digital experiences.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility.

Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
