The Associate Development Editor role is part of our Nursing Education and Nursing Practice portfolios, focusing on creating quality content and delivering innovative solutions in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the product development cycle in collaboration with the Editorial Operations team or Product Manager, for all assigned projects, including textbooks, digital assets, videos, and ancillaries.
  • Collaborate with the Acquisition Editor and Marketing Manager in product planning and evaluation, formulate market surveys, desired outcomes for focus groups, and scripts for other planned activities to gather customer insight and feedback, and assess how assigned products align with other products in the company's portfolio and identify opportunities for collaboration and integration.
  • Work with subject matter experts, authors, vendors, and/or in-house staff to develop core content suitable for multiple platforms and appropriate for customers.
  • Communicate/interact with customers through surveys, focus groups, or other activities to understand their needs, pain points, learning environment, and market trends.
  • Provide written analysis of customer feedback and competitive products to assist Acquisition Editors in understanding market segments, including competitive landscape, market trends, and customer demographics.
  • Help define the scope and deliverables of products based on market feedback and competitive analysis.
  • Analyze proposals and sample content to determine market viability and evaluate the ability of subject matter experts and authors to create and revise content according to the project plan.
  • Create comprehensive project budgets and coordinate with the Editorial Operations team to develop schedules and project plans.
  • Manage content and media development via vendors, subject matter experts, and freelancers, ensuring all deliverables meet specifications, deadlines, scope, and budget.
  • Demonstrate development editing capabilities by analyzing authors'/SMEs' presentations and writing styles, providing direction as needed.
  • Work with Editorial Assistants to commission reviews of content and features, evaluate customer feedback, and ensure products meet market needs.
  • Alert Acquisition Editors and Marketing to new opportunities discovered through customer interactions.
  • Track project status, schedule, and budget, and assist in preparing management reports.
  • Problem-solve quality, scope, schedule, and budget issues, collaborating with the Editorial Operations team to resolve breakdowns.
  • Assist Marketing with sales inquiries when appropriate.
  • Manage customer escalations from Online Product (Technical) Support.

Requirements

  • Have a BA/BS degree.
  • Experience in academic and/or healthcare publishing.
  • At least 1-2 years of editorial publishing experience developing print and/or digital products, preferably in higher education or healthcare markets.
  • Experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external customers, demonstrating flexibility, diplomacy, and a cooperative/team attitude.
  • Strong detail orientation combined with broad conceptual understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership abilities, prioritization, and time management skills, with strong editing knowledge.
  • Familiarity with APA Publication Manual, 7th edition, and bias-free language with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to analyze proposal reviews and create review analyses to aid product development.
  • Ability to develop market knowledge and awareness of larger strategic issues such as competition and publishing strategies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Project management skills, including time/resource utilization, budgeting, and reporting for multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to travel approximately 5-10% to the Philadelphia office.

  • Experience working with vendors, freelancers, and subject matter experts.
  • Familiarity with market research and customer feedback analysis.
