About the Role

With a nationwide presence, AARP strengthens communities and advocates for health and financial security, personal fulfillment, and marketplace solutions for Americans 50-plus and their families. The organization produces the nation's largest-circulation publications and includes a Community, State and National Affairs Group that focuses on education, engagement, and advocacy at various government levels. The Associate State Director, Community Outreach and Advocacy, develops and executes advocacy activities at the state, federal, and local levels, leading campaigns, building community partnerships, and managing volunteer teams to promote organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identifies issues of public policy and organizational importance, and develops and implements advocacy strategies at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams and external partners on advocacy campaign communication strategies.
  • Utilizes grassroots advocacy tools and direct action organizing tactics to build constituent support for legislative priorities.
  • Establishes a presence in targeted communities by engaging multicultural audiences, developing partnerships, and designing community programs and events.
  • Represents the organization to government agencies, media outlets, and the public, maintaining relationships with elected officials and community leaders.
  • Develops and communicates persuasive narratives aligned with organizational priorities to diverse audiences.
  • Recruits, trains, develops, and deploys volunteers, ensuring their interests align with organizational goals and maximizing engagement.
  • Produces written reports and convenes public meetings to share findings, best practices, and solutions.

Requirements

  • Completion of a BA degree plus a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Understanding of community organizing, communications, marketing, and public relations.
  • Experience with grassroots organizing, volunteer recruitment, training, and retention.
  • Strong social media and writing skills, with the ability to tell cohesive stories through visual elements and familiarity with new media platforms.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to handle multiple issues and projects in a matrix team approach, requiring collaboration and consultation.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% within local and state areas, including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in an office/open office environment with moderate noise.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with local and state business, government, entertainment, and community service environments.
  • Experience working with community service leaders, non-profit organizations, and addressing city-wide community needs.

Qualifications

  • BA degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
