About the Role

The Rights Systems team is driving the technical foundations of a step-change for Spotify's business by enabling the distribution of new forms of content across the platform. This challenge involves detection of rights-protected intellectual property and facilitating rightsholder and creator management of both the rights-protected IP and the secondary content. The team collaborates with various departments to create and present novel content datasets to end-users. As the product matures, the team will scale to broader use cases and a larger user base, becoming a key part of Spotify's video-first strategy. The squad on which this role is a founding member will focus on Rights data, creating a new domain within Spotify's data landscape that serves as a system of record for IP rights ownership of content on the platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with a fullstack team to build and launch backend services & data pipelines that power a new rights database to serve as a source of truth for Spotify.
  • Work closely with product, insights, design and other backend engineers to understand the needs of external customers and internal partners such as Music Expression, Content Platform, Financial Engineering, Licensing & Publishing.
  • Deliver scalable, testable, maintainable, and high-quality backend code.
  • Maintain data pipelines that support the Rights ecosystem.
  • Support timely delivery of technical solutions to address business needs.
  • Advocate and promote modern, agile software development practices and help develop and evangelize engineering and organizational practices.
  • Collaborate with external teams when needed to deliver consumer video experiences in the Spotify app.
  • Contribute to a healthy, collaborative team culture aligned with company values.
  • Participate in team-wide product ideation with other specialists, researchers, product managers, and subject-matter experts.
  • Engage in an environment that supports individual growth through exciting work, hack days, reading groups, and internal training courses.

Requirements

  • Strong command of backend development best practices and a proven track record of delivering DRY, maintainable code that scales across all levels of production-level traffic.
  • Experience in designing and building distributed, high-volume services in Java or similar languages.
  • Working understanding of delivering data solutions using Scio and Scala.
  • Some exposure to data warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, etc., and orchestration platforms like Flyte.
  • Support experience with high throughput user-facing systems in production and applying learnings from incidents when building new features.
  • Ownership of solutions end-to-end, from scoping tickets to deployment and smoke testing in production.
  • Knowledge of modern testing, debugging, and automation techniques to ensure code quality.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented and functional programming paradigms.
  • Proactive identification of tech debt and collaboration with the team to prioritize it.
  • Interest in expanding data skillset to enhance web development capabilities.
  • Care for software architecture across front-end, back-end, and APIs.
  • Eagerness to learn new problem spaces and domains.
  • Team-oriented mindset to foster success and create opportunities for oneself and teammates.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with supporting high throughput user-facing systems in production.
  • Familiarity with data warehouses like BigQuery, Snowflake, and orchestration platforms such as Flyte.
  • Interest in rounding out data skillset to strengthen web development.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in backend development, preferably in Java or similar languages.
  • Experience with data solutions and data warehouses such as BigQuery or Snowflake.
  • Knowledge of distributed, high-volume service design.
