About the Role

i3 is searching for a Data Scientist to support the Missile Defense Agency Information Management and Software Services (AIMSS) effort. The mission is to design and implement a Missile Defense System with multiple layers of protection. The Data Scientist serves as data SME when designing, developing or optimizing data driven solutions and applications. Helps the organization make informed choices based on empirical evidence. This position is located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and integrate relevant internal and third-party data sources to support analytical objectives.
  • Coordinate analytic efforts across diverse structured and unstructured data sources, employing programming (e.g., Python, SQL) to clean, transform, and prepare data for advanced analysis.
  • Partner with Data Engineers to establish scalable data pipelines and cloud-native architectures (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, AWS).
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) and apply statistical techniques grounded in the scientific method to identify trends, anomalies, and validate hypotheses.
  • Apply statistical techniques (regression, hypothesis testing, clustering, time series analysis) to uncover trends and inform hypotheses.
  • Document findings and methodologies to support reproducibility and auditability.
  • Develop and implement predictive and prescriptive models using supervised and unsupervised learning methods.
  • Apply machine learning algorithms, natural language processing (NLP), and optimization techniques to complex mission problems.
  • Continuously evaluate model performance and refine algorithms as needed.
  • Design interactive dashboards and data visualizations using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or R Shiny.
  • Present analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Generate reports and briefings to communicate actionable insights in support of decision-making.
  • Serve as a data science subject matter expert to government stakeholders and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Translate mission requirements into analytic solutions and advise on data-driven strategies.
  • Mentor junior analysts and data scientists on best practices and analytic workflows.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a STEM field.
  • 15+ years of relevant IT experience.
  • Demonstrated experience applying complex datasets and deploying models in operational environments.
  • Prior work with government or defense agencies preferred; experience supporting MDA or national security programs is highly valued.
  • Active Secret clearance required and ability to maintain security clearance.
  • Must reside within a 50-mile radius of Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville AL or be willing to relocate prior to start date.
  • Ability to reliably commute to the office as business needs dictate.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, and SQL for data manipulation, analysis, and modeling.
  • Proficient in Agile Development and Git Operations.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar) and big data tools (Spark, Hadoop).
  • Experience with data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or R Shiny.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to translate complex analytics into actionable insights.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-oriented environment.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Effective project management and time management skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting MDA or national security programs.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms like AWS or Azure.
  • Experience with big data tools such as Spark or Hadoop.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff.
