Job Description

About the Role

The NYISO's Operations department invites applications for a full-time Data Scientist to join the Demand Forecasting and Analysis team. The role involves developing long-term and short-term peak and energy demand forecasts for the New York Control Area through analysis of electric load, weather, climate trends, and emerging technologies such as behind-the-meter solar, electric vehicles, and heat pumps. The Data Scientist will utilize statistical, engineering, algorithmic, and data science techniques, manage data sets, and collaborate with colleagues on analytical, programming, and modeling activities. The position supports both short-term and long-term forecasting horizons, with responsibilities spanning real-time forecast models, long-term demand projections, and database management, all performed independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain forecast models (e.g., regression, machine learning, analytical models) and data sets.
  • Implement and maintain data quality control processes to ensure clean datasets for model training.
  • Create functional tests to verify forecast system changes and ensure improvements are achieved without defects.
  • Perform forecast verification analyses and exploratory data analyses of demand patterns.
  • Analyze and visualize large data volumes using high-level programming/scripting languages and create impactful charts for stakeholders.
  • Review peer models and datasets, suggest improvements to enhance performance, maintainability, and standards compliance.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Software Development, IT teams, and Project Managers to manage forecast model changes and supporting systems.
  • Coordinate with neighboring ISOs and regional/national reliability councils as appropriate.
  • Evaluate new technologies, tools, and datasets, and incorporate them into forecast development processes.
  • Document tools, designs, datasets, and procedures within the department.
  • Respond to stakeholder feedback, troubleshoot issues, and suggest improvements.
  • Mentor and coach Associate Data Scientists.
  • Support daily review of Day-Ahead and Real-Time energy and solar forecasts, recommend corrective actions, and revise models annually.
  • Maintain databases of actual and forecasted energy, weather, and solar data.
  • Monitor forecast accuracy monthly and perform annual assessments under various weather conditions.
  • Evaluate weather and solar forecast services and communicate forecast updates and reports.
  • Develop long-term energy and demand forecasts, including demand-side impacts and budget forecasts.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for market participants and coordinate the annual Load and Capacity Data Report.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, or related discipline.
  • Three or more years of experience in data science, load forecasting, operations research, load research, applied statistics, mathematics, or meteorology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret energy forecasting and statistical concepts and methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret technical and regulatory documents and write reports and procedures.
  • Proficiency or aptitude in MetrixND, SAS/Python, Excel, OSIsoft PI, SQL, VBA, MS Access, PowerPoint, and other proprietary tools.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software, primarily the ESRI ecosystem.
  • Competency in Windows environment using MS Office, email, and internet applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with forecasting models, statistical inference, and engineering techniques.
  • Knowledge of regional and national reliability standards.
  • Experience with high-level software programming tools and data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with demand-side technologies such as solar PV, energy storage, and electric vehicles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, or related discipline.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience or equivalent training.
