About the Role

The Developer III (Java) role at Expeditors involves working within the exp.o Customs application development team to develop a core business application designed to facilitate customs and government agency filings globally. The company specializes in global supply chain management with a focus on professionalism, leadership, and innovation, supporting a customer service-based approach to logistics across over 350 locations worldwide. This position is on-site in the greater Seattle, WA area, contributing to delivering consistent service, operational efficiency, and compliance with governmental and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Applying object-oriented design and analysis experience to identify and implement appropriate design patterns and frameworks to translate business requirements into scalable, efficient, and reliable system design specifications.
  • Driving technical design decisions at the team level.
  • Using technical and interpersonal skills to proactively guide teammates on dependencies and technical approaches for problems.
  • Leading the team in conducting code reviews and promoting best practices to ensure high code quality.
  • Driving project technical direction and decisions by contributing to technical discussions, mentoring junior engineers, and advocating for the best technical solutions.
  • Demonstrating leadership qualities such as ownership, communication, creativity, initiative, attention to detail, and mentoring other developers.
  • Communicating technical details effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Embracing and promoting technologies including Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery practices.
  • Continuously learning about emerging technologies that can add business value to the core system.

Requirements

  • BS or BA in Computer Science or similar, or comparable work experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years in analysis and design using object-oriented techniques, with experience working with backend code (Java/Spring) to write business logic and database queries.
  • 5+ years of programming experience with Java in a professional setting.
  • 5+ years of professional experience with relational databases, PostgresSQL, SQL, and ORM in enterprise applications.
  • Demonstrated long-term experience supporting enterprise systems.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with developing applications using object-relational mapping frameworks such as Hibernate.
  • Proficiency with Spring Core and familiarity with Spring Data Access and Integration modules.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and monitoring.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with event-driven architecture.
  • Experience with transportation and logistics or supply-chain solutions.
  • Experience with compliance or risk-management solutions.
  • Experience with SOAP and REST Service Implementation.
  • Experience with Java IDEs like IntelliJ and Eclipse.
  • Experience with Git, branching, and merge requests/pull requests.
  • Experience with Kafka.
  • Experience with enterprise Linux operating systems.

Qualifications

  • BS or BA in Computer Science or similar; or comparable work experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
