About the Role

The Director of Data Science will help drive the development of industry-leading predictive models as part of the Enterprise Analytics Team at Sysco. The role involves owning the technical development of a portfolio of domain-specific predictive models to support various functional groups such as Pricing, Merchandising, Supply Chain & Logistics. The position requires leading and coaching data scientists to succeed in their responsibilities and in support of the portfolio of models, with a focus on delivering actionable business insights through advanced analytics and machine learning.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the technical development of an industry-leading predictive analytics portfolio in support of key functional & business priorities such as demand generation, assortment optimization, and supply chain design & optimization.
Work with VPs and Sr Directors across Sysco to frame business opportunities and develop appropriate analytic strategies.
Ensure the appropriate analytical techniques are used to solve business opportunities.
Implement data science models and visualizations using Python, Tableau, and open source libraries.
Manage, attract, coach, retain, and motivate a world-class team of scientists and engineers.
Lead multiple projects simultaneously and assist in resource planning.
Perform regular code reviews and provide feedback on approach and coding standards to junior data scientists.
Design and execute experiments to validate solutions during product rollout and present results to leadership.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive business results through various customer-level use cases.
Work with Sysco's technology teams on data integration to architect, build, and improve data assets.
Research industry-leading analytics practices and recommend continuous improvement opportunities.
Represent Sysco in industry events.

Requirements

Ability to think conceptually, strategically, and creatively with little oversight or direction.
Experience initiating, driving, and delivering complex analytical projects.
Proficiency in performing quantitative analysis using tools such as Python, Tableau, and open source libraries.
Strong software design and object-oriented programming fundamentals.
Demonstrated experience using machine learning algorithms in a commercial setting.
High proficiency with statistical packages and understanding their advantages and limitations.
Proficiency in statistical analysis, forecasting, predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization algorithms.
Comfort with numbers and understanding of various analytical techniques.
Basic understanding of database systems and technologies enabling advanced analytics, including cloud solutions like AWS.
Experience in accessing and manipulating data in SQL or NoSQL environments (5+ years).
Experience with scientific scripting languages (e.g., Python) and object-oriented programming (e.g., C++, Java) (4+ years).
Experience with Bayesian statistics, regression analysis, supervised and unsupervised learning, or time series analysis (5+ years).
Educational background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related fields, with a degree from a top-tier university preferred.
Professional skills including inquisitiveness, innovation, motivation, strong communication, strategic thinking, and business acumen.

Nice to Have

Experience in CPG, Retail, and/or Foodservice industries.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree + 10 years, or Master's degree + 7 years, or PhD + 5 years of industry experience in analytics or related fields.
