Principle Backend Engineer

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Optimize, grow, and maintain a Python/Kubernetes-based system orchestrating 20+ computer vision models with extreme reliability and speed.
• Design and implement new algorithms and models for image processing and editing throughout the photo sorting, detection, and editing pipeline.
• Mentor junior developers in building features and implementing new models and algorithms in the processing pipeline.
• Own the goal of increasing daily photo editing volume by 5X while decreasing the average time per photoshoot by 5X.
• Optimize GPU memory usage to increase parallel inference capabilities and decrease processing time in Google Cloud Platform.
• Contribute to scaling the system to handle increased throughput and efficiency.

Requirements

• 6-10+ years of experience building and scaling complex backend systems.
• Experience overseeing high volume throughput systems, such as defect detection in manufacturing or similar.
• High agency problem-solving skills with minimal guidance, able to make projects happen independently.
• Extreme productivity and speed in work delivery, capable of building and shipping large projects on a weekly basis.
• Obsessive focus on engineering excellence and delivering world-class output.
• Willingness to dedicate significant time to building AutoHDR for real estate photo editing.
• Proven track record of mentoring and growing junior developers.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python (FastAPI), relational databases (MySQL), and Kubernetes.
• Experience or familiarity with model training and deployment (optional).

Nice to Have

• Experience with GPU optimization and cloud infrastructure, particularly Google Cloud Platform.
• Background in computer vision models and image processing algorithms.
• Experience working in fast-paced startup environments with long work hours.

Qualifications

• Formal experience or background in building scalable backend systems.
• Proficiency in Python, FastAPI, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor junior developers.
