About the Role

The Translational Neural Engineering Laboratory in the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Research Engineer interested in working at the intersection of technology, neuroscience, and mental health. The laboratory develops technologies for changing activity in distributed brain networks involved in severe mental illnesses such as PTSD, major depression, addiction, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The role involves recording electrical brain signals and delivering targeted stimulation in both model animal systems and human volunteers, utilizing techniques from brain-computer interface/neural prosthetic technologies. This is a support/cross project role working collaboratively to develop, maintain, and extend data analysis pipelines that fuse signals from video, physical sensing, and electrical brain recordings to understand the biological basis of mental illness.

Key Responsibilities

  • 50% analytic code development and testing in Python, R, and/or MATLAB, including creating publication-quality figures, reports, and insights from analysis.
  • 30% interaction with laboratory team members and external stakeholders to identify requirements, debug problems, and plan future directions, with an emphasis on anticipating future needs.
  • 10% communication of findings, work products, and technical concepts in professional English and clear graphical metaphors.
  • 10% performing other duties related to the primary scope of the role as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree with at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience totaling at least six years.
  • Experience with digital processing techniques such as filtering and frequency-domain transforms.
  • Experience with digital or analog electronics.
  • Experience with GitHub-based code management.

Nice to Have

  • Additional experience with open-source/reusable toolkits.
  • Experience working with data in a wide range of formats and designing scripts/tools for flexible data ingestion and merging.
