About the Role

The Athletic's newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs. Data is central to The Athletic's decision-making process—it guides how we build and market our product, as well as how we produce content. We're looking for a Senior Data Analyst who will be defining core business metrics, answering high-impact strategic questions, and scaling analytics tools and methodologies. You'll be collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Engineering, and Data Science to deliver insights that shape the user experience and drive engagement. This role is 100% remote for candidates currently residing in the United States or Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inform our product strategy by developing a deep understanding of sports media, our users, and how they engage with our product.
  • Communicate with and advise a variety of stakeholders ranging from senior leadership to product managers. Establish a relationship and build trust between them and the data organization.
  • Work closely with product management to provide insights into user behavior and feature performance and help iterate on products that are loved by our users.
  • Build and own self-service analytics tools and dashboards and define new metrics to provide better visibility into business performance and improve forecast accuracy.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to implement event tracking, experiments, and data pipelines.

Requirements

  • 4-7+ years experience in data analytics for a subscription based or web-based business.
  • Highly analytical mindset and excellent ability to communicate complex analytic concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences as well as senior leadership.
  • High proficiency in SQL and comfortable navigating data to perform a wide range of analyses.
  • Familiarity with using Python, R, or another scripting language to model data.
  • Experience with advanced analytic techniques like segmentation, clustering, regression, power analysis.
  • Experience with analytic and BI tools like DBT, Mode Analytics, Tableau, etc.
