About the Role

You will join a group of publishing professionals within the Global Publishing team, which is part of the firm's Reach & Engagement function. Our team supports authors to develop powerful editorial products that will make an impact on our many audiences. As a senior editor, you will work with highly skilled McKinsey colleagues from around the world to develop and publish distinctive content across digital and print platforms. You will engage and inspire colleagues through your thought partnership and leadership skills to advance the firm's publishing objectives, manage editorial publications and programs, and shape content into various editorial products related to strategy and corporate finance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and publish distinctive content across digital and print platforms in collaboration with authors and stakeholders.
  • Manage editorial publications and programs, coordinating with relevant McKinsey publishing groups and stakeholders to ensure projects are completed, approved, produced, and published on time.
  • Act as a thought partner and service provider (e.g., line editor) working with senior consultants and industry/functional experts to create publishing strategies that align with firm objectives.
  • Develop persuasive storylines and write compelling drafts on business topics, focusing on strategy and corporate finance areas such as M&A, portfolio strategy, CEO excellence, and regulatory strategy.
  • Shape content copy into a range of editorial products including articles, white papers, reports, blog posts, podcasts, and videos.
  • Review and edit content to ensure it follows conventions of written English, maintains consistency of voice/tone/style, and aligns with firm style and risk/reputation guidelines.
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external teams and McKinsey leadership to support an increasing volume of editorial projects.
  • Lead projects or workstreams independently or with a team, staying informed on business news and trends to ensure content is current and aligned with the firm's position.
  • Support entry-level and junior editors' development and contribute to ad hoc editorial projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's/University degree; advanced degree in journalism is a plus.
  • Years of experience in business writing and editing, including digital publishing, preferably for an English-language business publication or professional-services firm.
  • Deep understanding of global business trends and detailed knowledge of strategy and corporate finance.
  • Data literacy and familiarity with audience engagement tools such as SEO and social media.
  • Strong mastery of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint) and team collaboration tools (SharePoint, Slack, Zoom).
  • Proficiency and fluency in verbal and written English; other language skills are a plus.
  • Excellent editorial skills (writing, editing), judgment, and business literacy, with the ability to quickly absorb complex ideas and produce accessible copy for a global audience.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, presentation).
  • Confidence in interactions with senior staff and subject-matter experts, with the ability to achieve consensus across multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to challenge content based on industry knowledge.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects, manage complex processes, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently in a low-structure environment, deal with ambiguity, and proactively seek guidance when needed.

  • Advanced degree in journalism.
  • Other language skills beyond English.
