Senior Manager, Data Science

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the data science team, setting goals, providing feedback, and fostering growth.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to define priorities across search, recommendations, personalization, analytics, experimentation, and data science platforms.
• Translate company objectives into a clear, actionable roadmap for the team.
• Represent data science perspectives in senior product and cross-functional forums, ensuring tradeoffs, dependencies, and resource needs are understood and prioritized.
• Guide the team to deliver with rigor and impact by shaping processes, metrics, and experimentation practices.
• Ensure architectural decisions for data science align with long-term company vision.
• Champion best practices in analytics and data science across ThredUp, building trust in data-driven decision making.
• Oversee data science-owned infrastructure such as the experimentation platform (Abbacado) and data science pipelines, ensuring reliability, scalability, and adoption.

Requirements

• 8+ years of leadership experience overseeing data science, analytics or comparable intelligence teams.
• Proven experience managing data scientists, analysts, and ML engineers, with a track record of growing and developing talent.
• Ability to define and drive technical and strategic roadmaps, balancing immediate delivery with long-term vision.
• Strong collaborator with senior Product, Engineering, and business leaders, skilled at influencing and aligning across functions.
• Deep understanding of applied analytics, experimentation, and machine learning in product settings.
• Excellent communication skills, able to simplify complex concepts and advocate for your team.
• Strategic thinker with an innovative, entrepreneurial mindset who thrives on ambiguity.
• Experience with large-scale personalization, search, or recommendation systems.
• Background in e-commerce, marketplaces, or consumer tech.
