About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and guide journalists across California to produce high-impact accountability, investigative, solutions-focused, utility news, and breaking news coverage.
• Drive digital strategy and ensure delivery of high-quality journalism that engages audiences and serves communities.
• Foster a culture of innovation and rapid iteration in reporting and storytelling formats.
• Work closely with top editors across California to set coverage and beat strategies reflecting community growth, diversity, and economic drivers.
• Lead the transformation of California newsrooms into agile, audience-focused digital news operations.
• Manage change effectively and approach the role with fresh ideas to connect with readers where they are.
• Harness artificial intelligence and automation responsibly to enhance work and create workflow efficiencies.
• Empower journalists to learn and employ audience-focused approaches to journalism.
• Collaborate with colleagues at The Sacramento Bee, The Fresno Bee, The Modesto Bee, the San Luis Obispo Tribune, and the Merced Sun-Star.

Requirements

• Proven ability to lead, inspire, and convey knowledge to others and to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues in managing change.
• Comfort with a demanding, fast-paced, constantly evolving, and outcome-oriented environment.
• A track record of innovation, flexibility, and managing change.
• At least five years of experience as a successful leader of a newsroom or large team.
• Experience working collaboratively across a large organization.
• Focus on ensuring content and staffing represent the diversity of the community and state.
• Experience working with news analytics to grow audience and increase subscriptions.
• Experience as a multi-platform storyteller, with passion for written, visual, and audio journalism.
• Ability to manage performance, set expectations, provide training, and hold staff accountable.
• Strong communication skills and ability to solve problems, innovate, and adapt to produce quality journalism that reaches and engages readers.

Nice to Have

• Experience in effective change management.
• Experience with audience analytics and tactics that deliver results.
• Knowledge of emerging reporting formats and storytelling tools.
• Interest in and experience with artificial intelligence and automation in journalism.
