About the Role

The American Physical Society (APS) is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its research journals, scientific meetings, education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. The role of Senior Product Owner, Digital Experience, involves defining and managing the product vision and strategy for APS's digital platforms, including websites, mobile platforms, and marketing technologies, to deliver user-centered digital experiences aligned with organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams to align product execution with organizational goals, communicating the product vision and roadmap effectively.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and maintain a clear product vision and roadmap, ensuring strategic alignment.
  • Partner with the experience team for user research, leveraging data analytics to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Oversee the product backlog, ensuring clarity, prioritization, and alignment with development team capabilities.
  • Define and prioritize user stories with clear acceptance criteria, aligning with product goals and user needs.
  • Work closely with the development team, providing direction and removing impediments while bridging the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Stay informed about market trends, competitive landscape, and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to product strategy.
  • Prioritize features based on value delivery and user experience enhancement.
  • Work with UX/UI teams on concept designs and wireframes, ensuring user-centric product development.
  • Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, simplifying complex technical topics for diverse audiences.
  • Own prioritization and execution of the digital product roadmap, ensuring timely delivery of high-impact features across web and mobile platforms.
  • Collaborate with departments across APS to support organization-wide digital goals.
  • Support governance, measurement, and continuous improvement practices related to APS's digital experience.
  • Promote flexible, feedback-driven delivery and clear team alignment.
  • Operate independently as a senior individual contributor, reporting to the Head of Product Development & Delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Marketing, Engineering, Technology, or related fields; significant relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in digital product ownership, web experience management, digital marketing, or technology-driven environments.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and understanding of publishing workflows.
  • Experience working with customer data platforms (CDP) and marketing automation tools.
  • Proven ability to lead digital product development from concept through launch and iteration.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and systems thinking.
  • Experience using modern product management tools such as Asana, Airtable, Jira.
  • Familiarity with design & prototyping tools like Figma and Photoshop.
  • Experience with collaboration and mapping tools such as Miro and Zoom.
  • Comfortable working with data & reporting tools like Looker Studio and Tableau.
  • Proficiency with productivity tools including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, shifting priorities, and evolving requirements while maintaining clear communication.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to travel up to 5% for meetings and events.

Nice to Have

  • Advanced or Master's degree in relevant fields.
  • Certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO).
  • Certifications in User Experience (UX) / Customer Experience (CX) such as CUA, UXC, or CCXP.
