Software Engineer, Quantum Compiling

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google's needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. Key to Google's plans for practical realization of quantum computation is the encoding of quantum information in quantum error correcting codes. In order to achieve reliability, the information must be manipulated using protocols that are fault-tolerant (i.e., that do not allow errors to proliferate). In this role, you will develop software for compiling logical quantum algorithms to low-level instructions that realize any given input algorithm fault-tolerantly in the presence of noise, decoherence, device defects and other imperfections. This includes frequent interactions, such as design discussions and pair programming, with research scientists. Other activities include software development in C++ under evolving requirements, writing python gluecode for integration with qubit control stack, advising on Software Engineering practices, improving code quality and test coverage, etc. The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.
