About the Role

The Sr. Development Writer is responsible for creating and developing clear, effective content for internal audiences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This role involves strategic planning, storytelling, and producing materials that support the school's strategic goals, development, and fundraising efforts. The position requires collaboration across departments, translating complex academic and scientific information into compelling narratives to engage donors and support philanthropic initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Stewardship and Development Communications, the Sr. Development Writer plays a key role in advancing the school's mission through high-level communication and content leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report about the school/division/department, or specialized topic/area of expertise
  • Participate in the development of reports and materials for external reviews
  • Develop and write complex, substantial, and important feature stories; conceptualize research, and conduct interviews
  • Responsible for web content, multiple publications, and other written pieces
  • May be responsible for production schedules and publication budgets
  • Identify and assess freelance contributors to ensure the appropriate knowledge base, skills, and adherence to style
  • Provide news updates, announcements, and time-sensitive communications on a broad variety of topics
  • Write and copyedit for a variety of communications and marketing materials
  • Responsible for print and web collateral for events
  • Develop content to support fundraising activities, events, and philanthropic proposals
  • Create fundraising campaign messages and materials
  • Develop various alumni communications
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including university and school communications teams
  • Translate complex scientific and academic information into compelling, donor-facing narratives
  • Serve as a project lead on high-visibility stewardship and communications initiatives
  • Oversee the strategic development and maintenance of the school's development webpages and digital platforms
  • Mentor colleagues within the Development and Alumni Relations team

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years related experience
  • Effective writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work on multiple high-priority projects concurrently with minimal supervision
  • Strong collaboration skills across departments
  • Deep storytelling expertise and ability to translate complex information into compelling narratives

Nice to Have

  • Experience in development or fundraising communications
  • Experience with digital content management and web platforms
  • Knowledge of academic or scientific communication

Qualifications

  • Formal educational background includes a Bachelor's degree
  • Relevant professional experience in writing, editing, or communications
