Job Description

About the Role

VEIC seeks a detail-oriented Technical Editor to join our dynamic in-house Creative & Digital team. In this role, you'll play a key part in refining and enhancing written materials across a wide range of formats, including business development proposals, consulting projects, regulatory reports, and technical documentation. You'll work closely with writers, designers, subject matter experts, and marketers to uphold brand and editorial standards, transforming complex or formal language into clear, consistent, and accurate content. While editing is your primary focus, you'll also contribute original writing—especially in support of proposals, executive summaries, and formal reports. This is an exciting opportunity to shape how critical information is communicated, ensuring clarity, compliance, and impact while supporting our brands and advancing our mission to reduce the economic and environmental costs of energy use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and edit business development proposals, regulatory reports, technical documentation, program materials (such as rebate and eligibility forms) and for internal and external audiences to ensure clarity, coherence, accuracy, and compliance with formatting and brand guidelines.
  • Edit for consistency of terminology, tone, and structure, particularly across high-stakes documents such as RFP responses and compliance materials.
  • Conduct thorough proofreading of materials for grammatical, typographical, and stylistic accuracy.
  • Manage multiple editorial projects with overlapping deadlines, ensuring quality and precision throughout.
  • Guide the structure, logic, and flow of content to strengthen narrative coherence and ensure alignment with project goals and audience needs.
  • Collaborate with writers and subject matter experts to shape early drafts, identify gaps, and refine messaging before the copyediting phase.
  • Draft or revise sections of proposals, executive summaries, or formal reports in collaboration with technical and business development leads.
  • Translate complex or technical concepts into accessible language tailored for evaluators, regulators, or clients.
  • Support the creation and refinement of internal templates, style guides, and boilerplate content for proposals and reports.
  • Partner with business development, regulatory, marketing, and design teams to produce polished, high-impact content.
  • Work with subject matter experts to clarify content, resolve inconsistencies, and ensure documents meet compliance and proposal requirements.
  • Provide actionable editorial feedback to authors and contributors, presenting recommendations clearly and diplomatically.
  • Stay current on industry-specific regulatory language, proposal trends, and best practices in formal communications.
  • Conduct content audits and quality reviews of past proposals and reports to inform future improvements.
  • Support strategic positioning of proposals by ensuring persuasive and compliant language throughout.
  • Continuously refine editing and writing skills, learn new tools or platforms, and contribute to a culture of editorial excellence and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of VEIC.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, technical communication, journalism, or a related field, plus 3+ years of experience in technical editing or a similar combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully and effectively edit a wide range of writers, including senior colleagues.
  • Experience editing and/or writing proposals, regulatory filings, or technical business reports.
  • Experience working in a consulting or client services environment, with familiarity in proposal development, business development writing, and collaborative project workflows.
  • Strong command of grammar, syntax, formatting, and content organization for formal documentation.
  • Comfortable working across a range of style guides, including the Chicago Manual of Style, and understanding of proposal and regulatory formatting conventions.
  • Ability to balance editorial precision with big-picture messaging and clarity.
  • Excellent collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, document automation tools, or proposal management platforms is a plus.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with evolving needs and responsibilities.
