About the Role

A Technical Editor - NEPA position is available with the Colorado State University Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position will support document formatting, production, and technical writing for the U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii (USAG-HI) NEPA Group. The role involves assisting in the preparation, editing, and formatting of environmental documents such as Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, briefings, and other related materials, ensuring technical accuracy and clarity. The position is located at Wheeler Army Airfield, Schofield Barracks, Oahu, and requires collaboration with environmental analysts, planners, and subject matter experts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine and edit documents for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Improve sentence structure.
  • Track document versioning.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to ensure accuracy of content.
  • Ensure highly technical information is accessible to the intended audience.
  • Ensure edits are consistent with the intended meaning.
  • Format and style documents in common software programs such as Word and Adobe.
  • Ensure documents adhere to required standards.
  • Ensure documents adhere to organizational style guides, formatting guidelines, and any applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Develop NEPA Group procedures to enhance collaboration and increase efficiency in document production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of professional editing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience editing and reviewing technical documents.
  • Strong understanding of technical writing principles and practices.
  • Excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, especially cloud-based versions (e.g., Microsoft 365).
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one by the employment start date.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; no visa sponsorship provided.

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with regulations such as NEPA.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing NEPA documents.
  • Experience with agency coordination (e.g., U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Hawaii Governor's Office and Department of Land and Natural Resources, State Historic Preservation Division).
  • Experience working for the Federal government.

Qualifications

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check.
  • Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) and public trust clearance.
  • Completion of NACI/SF85 and passing a federal background check.
