About the Role

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a dynamic leader as the Director of Data and Analytics Capabilities to join our U.S. Market Access (USMA) organization leading transformative innovation within the Data & Analytics (D&A) Center of Excellence (COE). This is an individual contributor role that will over time lead a team of data analysts and scientists, offering a unique opportunity to shape and lead the future of AI-powered decision-making across Market Access functions while supporting one of the most innovative pipelines in the pharmaceutical industry. The role involves designing and executing transformative AI/ML strategies, including emerging areas such as Generative AI and Agentic AI frameworks, with deep domain expertise across at least two core pillars of U.S. Market Access. The Director will work cross-functionally with senior executives to align data-driven insights with strategic business priorities, fostering innovation, championing data-centric thinking, and elevating analytical capabilities across key Market Access domains. The position emphasizes leading change, influencing stakeholders, and translating complex data into actionable narratives to support organizational goals and patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute data & analytics capabilities that enable scalable insights across in-line brands and pipeline assets aligned with US Market Access business priorities to drive results and improve patient outcomes.
  • Manage direct reports responsible for Data Enablement, Data Governance, and Advanced Analytics.
  • Oversee Data Enablement to establish a common data foundation of analytics-ready data products, ensuring seamless integration across multiple data domains including payer accounts, field operations, pricing, chargebacks, reimbursements, trade, distribution, and third-party data acquisition.
  • Lead the implementation of a data governance framework to ensure data discipline, integrity, security, and compliance, strengthening the foundation for D&A innovation.
  • Build and lead a team to enable real-time insights through AI-driven models, self-service analytics, and predictive intelligence, generating pipeline value narratives and supporting market shaping and launch success.
  • Elevate analytics with advanced machine learning models, including attribution models, anomaly detection, and continuous performance monitoring to identify opportunities and inform strategic decisions.
  • Foster a data-driven culture by leading enterprise-wide data literacy and training initiatives, empowering teams to leverage AI/ML insights.
  • Lead change management efforts to embed Gen AI-enhanced capabilities into strategic decision-making, including developing an intelligent knowledge hub with conversational interfaces.
  • Partner with Digital Technology & Engineering (DTE), GIACO, HEOR, DSS to create a seamless AI-powered data ecosystem.
  • Monitor emerging technologies, trends, and best practices to ensure continuous innovation in ML, Generative AI, and analytics-driven decision-making.
  • Describe the current state of the business and identify influencing factors in partnership with DTE and GIACO teams.
  • Serve as an advocate and develop strong partnerships to integrate market access insights across the Vertex enterprise.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as Engineering, Statistics, Economics, or Finance.
  • 10+ years of experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industries in Managed Markets or biopharma consulting (analytics, management, or strategic) post-MBA/PhD, with meaningful biotech/pharmaceuticals and quantitative decision support experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in developing insights that inform value, access, reimbursement, and contracting strategies.
  • Proficiency in Data & Analytics with expertise in U.S. Market Access strategies, payer account management, and channel dynamics.
  • Experience working with syndicated Market Access databases (IQVIA, MMIT, etc.) and shipment data (852, 867, Integrichain, etc.).
  • Strong analytical skills with tools such as Excel, SQL, SAS, Alteryx, PowerBI, and working knowledge of R, Python, and data warehouse platforms like Snowflake.
  • Ability to network with internal and external stakeholders to form strong partnerships.
  • Strategic thinking skills to identify operational trends and assess their impact on broader strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to C-suite management and external stakeholders.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, diplomacy, and capacity to deal effectively with ambiguity.
  • Ability to support financial forecasting, commercial launch planning, and communicate complex information clearly.

Nice to Have

  • PhD or MBA/ MPH in combination with a Master's in a quantitative discipline.
  • Good understanding of state/federal policies, government programs impacting market access, and statutory government pricing methodologies.
  • 8-10 years of pharmaceutical market access experience with subject matter expertise in Health Plans, PBMs, Hospital Systems, Specialty Pharmacies, and Healthcare Policy stakeholders.
  • Diverse US product launch experience across different therapeutic areas.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Finance).
  • 10+ years of experience in biotech/pharmaceuticals in Managed Markets or biopharma consulting.
  • 7+ years of experience in insights related to value, access, reimbursement, and contracting strategies.
