Job Description

About the Role

The Assistant Director, Content Development and Strategy, SBTD, supports the Division of Small Business & Technology Development (SBTD) by collaborating with teams and departments to develop outreach strategies and communication materials. The role aims to increase awareness and engagement with SBTD programs, especially among underserved audiences, to promote entrepreneurs, startups, innovation, and small businesses across New York State.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with SBTD divisions to develop and draft outreach and marketing strategies targeting key audiences, with emphasis on the State Small Business Credit Initiative programs.
  • Collaborate with SBTD divisions to create storylines, social media content, one-pagers, website copy, blog posts, and other communication collateral to raise public awareness and media interest.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including ESD's Public Affairs and Marketing teams, on communications and outreach efforts.
  • Establish and track metrics to evaluate content performance, engagement, and impact across digital platforms.
  • Create and maintain the SBTD editorial calendar for upcoming events, webinars, conferences, social media campaigns, and awareness initiatives.
  • Lead efforts to update and maintain the SBTD web presence on esd.ny.gov.
  • Review, edit, and assist in preparing reports and documents for public release or internal use, including briefing materials for ESD leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field preferred; seven years of relevant experience may substitute for degree.
  • At least 5+ years of experience in written communications or related fields such as journalism.
  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to craft compelling, clear, and engaging stories with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience generating content for social media or other public communication channels.
  • Strong multitasking skills, organization, and ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
  • Collaborative team player capable of representing SBTD effectively to internal and external partners.
  • Knowledge of layout and graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign or related programs.
  • Experience with at least one program management or customer relationship management (CRM) tool.
  • Experience preparing and uploading video content to social media platforms is a plus.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working for or in collaboration with government agencies.
  • Experience with video content creation and dissemination.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field (preferred).
  • Seven years of relevant experience may be substituted for degree.
