The Technology team drives the evolution of our Technology, Engineering, Data, Product and User Experience functions, focusing on delivering cutting-edge solutions and shaping the digital landscape for our customers, readers, and users. The Program Manager, Cloud Costs and FinOps, will lead cost tracking, optimization, and efficiency efforts across all engineering departments, including AWS and GCP cost management, cloud governance, and cost reduction initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with senior executives and senior engineers to develop and implement department-wide cloud cost saving and optimization programs.
  • Effectively communicate program goals, activities, progress, and risks to stakeholders with different backgrounds, including financial, engineering, and operations, translating technical concepts into business impacts.
  • Build cross-departmental relationships to solve cloud usage and cost problems.
  • Engage with cloud provider representatives (e.g., TAM) to bring back best practices and change notifications to engineering and leadership teams and share requests for support.
  • Develop and maintain effective status reports for cloud cost and engineering team progress on cost-saving projects.
  • Review and summarize large data sets to provide insight to senior executives on progress toward meeting cloud cost, tagging, and optimization goals.
  • Support engineers' cost management activities by building custom cost reports and lists of savings opportunities.
  • Coordinate implementation of new cloud financial management tools for cloud cost management by engineering teams.
  • Manage multiple complex department-wide initiatives involving multiple engineering teams and centralized technical teams.
  • Develop and implement process improvements for managing cloud costs.
  • Solicit cloud cost saving project ideas, estimate potential savings, and prioritize them with input from engineering teams.
  • Coordinate collaboration between engineering teams to share best practices for reviewing and optimizing cloud spend.
  • Summarize detailed cloud cost levers and tasks into high-level themes and conduct periodic briefings to stakeholders and executive management.
  • Train and educate engineers on reviewing and tracking their cloud spending.
  • Manage the cloud spend forecast, solicit input from engineering teams, and communicate expected spend to finance for budgeting.
  • Review inter-company chargebacks with News Corp and Finance teams to ensure accuracy.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in AWS and/or GCP cost management tools and platforms.
  • Experience with data analysis and report generation, translating technical concepts into business impacts.
  • Ability to review inter-company chargebacks with a high degree of ownership and accuracy.
  • Ability to summarize information and generate actionable next steps.
  • Lead effective virtual meetings, holding senior leaders accountable for outcomes.
  • Familiarity with cloud resource tagging strategies and implementation.
  • Comfortable owning cloud savings targets and initiatives, proactively soliciting input from engineering teams and communicating expected spend for budgeting.
  • Experience with forecasting in a matrixed organizational environment.
  • Build cross-departmental relationships to solve cloud usage and cost problems.
  • Engagement with cloud provider representatives to bring back best practices and support requests.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a technical program management or cloud operations role.
  • Knowledge of FinOps principles and best practices.
  • Experience with cloud financial management tools.

Nice to Have

  • AWS Cloud Practitioner or FinOps Certified Practitioner certification.
