About the Role

The City of Santa Cruz is recruiting for Community Service Officer candidates to join a department recognized for innovative community-based policing strategies. The role involves working alongside a great team, interacting with a diverse community, and contributing to efforts that improve quality of life in Santa Cruz. It is a non-sworn position that does not require previous law enforcement experience, with state-of-the-art training and opportunities to make a community impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Takes and investigates crime and traffic reports which are low risk in nature or are not in progress.
  • Identifies, preserves, collects, and analyzes evidence associated with criminal incidents.
  • Handles both emergency and non-emergency calls to assist citizens.
  • Performs general patrol duties, both on foot and in vehicles, as a crime deterrent.
  • Enforces municipal code violations, issues warnings and citations.
  • Maintains a uniformed presence, assists the public and merchants, and provides security.
  • Transports victims, witnesses, and prisoners as needed.
  • Checks security of buildings, detects fire and liability hazards.
  • Performs vehicle abatement duties, including parking violation enforcement and towing coordination.
  • Appears in court as necessary.
  • May direct and control traffic at accidents or events, and perform crowd control duties.
  • Fingerprints individuals and performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or tested equivalent.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational skills to gather and coordinate data.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Ability to effectively listen, comprehend, and communicate via police radio.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Ability to compile and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to read maps and mapped information.
  • Ability to learn and explain regulations, codes, and procedures.
  • Ability to diagram, photograph, or video crime scenes.
  • Ability to logically interview victims and witnesses.
  • Ability to operate word processing equipment.
  • Ability to learn police radio procedures.
  • Willingness to wear a uniform and carry equipment such as baton, chemical agent, Taser, handcuffs, and radio.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to attend community service officer training academy.
  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Completion of POST 832 PC - Powers of Arrest Course within three months of hire.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation, psychological exam, and medical exam.

Nice to Have

  • Experience or education related to law enforcement.
  • Bilingual ability to speak and write in English and Spanish.
  • Possession of certification in advanced first aid and CPR.
  • Possession of a Private Security Officer License and Private Security Baton License issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Typing skills of 45 wpm.
  • Possession of POST 832 PC certification.
  • Police Lieutenant, Police Sergeant, Police Officer, Police Officer Trainee, Community Service Officer.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Completion of POST 832 PC - Powers of Arrest Course within three months of hire.
