About the Role

The Tennessean is seeking an editor to oversee a team of reporters at this Gannett daily website and newspaper. The role involves leading newsroom efforts to produce award-winning news coverage, engaging with the community through storytelling and outreach, and collaborating with various teams to enhance content delivery across multiple platforms. The position is based in Nashville, Tennessee, a vibrant city known for its music, sports, and cultural scene, and is part of a fast-paced, award-winning news organization committed to quality journalism and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains daily and weekly local news coverage plans.
  • Coaches the staff to provide quality content, including articles, photos, and videos.
  • Represents the newspaper to the community.
  • Works closely with the regional news operations team to share content.
  • Works with digital and print planners to coordinate presentation.
  • Plans training for news staff.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues, and the institutional brand.
  • Completes administrative duties within the news department.
  • Provides great customer service.
  • Charting the course for The Tennessean's award-winning news coverage.
  • Scheduling and directing news staff to create storytelling that accurately informs, entertains, and engages specific audiences on multiple platforms.
  • Evaluating what's working and what's not with the News Director, other group editors, and audience analysts.
  • Developing ongoing plans with staff to better satisfy audience needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or equivalent in experience and education.
  • Five years' experience developing a personal brand through reporting or editing across online or print, plus social media platforms.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
  • Knowledge of social media and customer feedback tools, including how to respond and engage customers on digital platforms.
  • Working knowledge of audience analytic tools such as Insights, Twitter Analytics, and Google Analytics.
  • Ability to interpret and apply audience data.
  • Exceptional journalism, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities, embrace peer-to-peer feedback, and work collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
  • Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills, plus knowledge of AP Style.
  • Knowledge of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite and CMS publishing skills.

  • Experience with community outreach and engagement.
