About the Role

Selective Insurance is seeking an energetic and collaborative Data Engineer Specialist to work on Data and Analytics projects supporting the Claims Analytics team within the Information Management group. The group is responsible for all Data Engineering, Machine Learning Engineering, Analytics and Reporting for the Claims business area. Key Responsibilities

Hands on development and support of new or existing data applications.
Work closely with the lead to create/review low level implementation designs and understand high level data flow designs developed by Data Architects.
Provide technical guidance to the team and work on implementing complex data solutions.
Support the design, development, code reviews, testing, deployment, and documentation of Data Engineering and Data Integration Applications.
Scale and optimize schema and performance tuning SQL and ETL pipelines in data lake and data warehouse environments.
Provide technical leadership and mentor junior data engineers.
Collaborate with Product Owners, Product Managers, Program Managers, Scrum Masters, and Team Members in a Scaled Agile framework.
Monitor the health of data pipelines and develop contingency plans for failures.
Maintain detailed documentation to support downstream integrations.
Provide support for production issues.

Requirements

5-7 years of experience in Data Warehousing, Data Integration, or Data Engineering projects.
Expert-level proficiency in Python, SQL, and Spark.
Strong experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
Expert level experience in Databricks and Delta Lake.
Proven track record of building enterprise-scale data platforms supporting analytics and machine learning.
Experience with streaming architectures (Kafka, Kinesis) and event-driven data processing.
Strong knowledge of data security, encryption, and access control in regulated environments.
Advanced working knowledge of SQL and query optimization.
Experience developing and managing CI/CD pipelines.
Good understanding of Data Structures and Data Models.
Experience with analytical platforms like PowerBI, AzureML, or Synapse.
Excellent communication skills.

Nice to Have

P&C Insurance experience.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related engineering field.
Certifications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics, Azure Data Engineer Associate).
Understanding of GenAI, LLMs, and their implementation for business use cases.
