Job Description

About the Role

Our design team is currently seeking a creative and ambitious Designer to join the Children's Licensing, Brands & Media Trade Art Department at Scholastic. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing multiple titles per season, including book covers and interiors for both original fiction and licensed content, targeting readers from preschool to young adult. You will oversee various brands and licenses, ensuring brand consistency and managing multiple projects across different formats, within a company dedicated to creating quality content that empowers children through literacy and learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and produce all stages of design and production for 20+ titles per year, including cover ideas and artist selections
  • Meet with editors, find and hire illustrators, packagers, and freelance designers, and manage schedules and deadlines
  • Keep editorial and production staff updated on project status, including any complications, and offer solutions for successful completion
  • Attend status and art management meetings, representing projects and the team professionally in presentations and discussions
  • Collaborate with other teams to create products within budget and work in partnership with licensors and vendors
  • Identify opportunities for business growth and revenue through creative services, stay updated on industry trends, and propose innovative strategies

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience in the publishing industry, ideally with license experience
  • Highly creative with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and juggle multiple titles
  • Highly motivated and organized
  • Proficiency in relevant art/design software
  • Experience designing for print and preparing files for print production
  • Ability to work within budgets

Nice to Have

  • Experience with children’s publishing
  • A Bachelor's degree in design (preferred)

Qualifications

  • Experience: 2-3 years in children’s publishing
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in design is preferred
