About the Role

The Director, Artificial intelligence & Innovation at BMO uses advanced analytical algorithms, AI, and related technologies to analyze large datasets, develop predictive models, and deliver smarter business decisions. The role involves managing a team of data scientists, collaborating with stakeholders, ensuring governance compliance, and fostering innovation to support BMO's strategic objectives and enhance customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of data scientists to bring advanced analytical algorithms and modeling approaches to solving BMO Commercial Banking business problems.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the Commercial Bank to uncover opportunities and develop a prioritized roadmap aligned with BMO's strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Data Engineering and Model Operations team to source data required for model development and operations.
  • Develop solutions appropriate to the problem statements, ensuring integration with business processes.
  • Work with the Sr. Manager, Strategy and Governance to meet governance requirements, including Responsible AI, Model Validation, Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance.
  • Prepare artifacts to fulfill the bank's Model Validation and Model Risk Management requirements.
  • Provide oversight and ongoing monitoring over deployed analytical assets and models, taking appropriate actions when needed.
  • Use data mining and extracting usable data from valuable sources to assess the feasibility of AI/ML solutions.
  • Conduct large-scale analysis to discover patterns and trends by combining different modules and algorithms.
  • Use analysis to provide recommendations and advice for business leaders to maintain market competitiveness.
  • Develop prediction systems and machine learning algorithms.
  • Investigate additional technologies and tools for developing innovative data solutions.
  • Collaborate with the product team and partners to understand and provide data-driven decision making, business planning, and future roadmap.
  • Build interdependent teams that collaborate across functions to create value for stakeholders.
  • Attract, retain, and enable the career development of top talent.
  • Improve team performance, recognize and reward performance, coach employees, and support their development.

Requirements

  • Expert level of proficiency in mathematics, statistics & operations research.
  • Expertise in artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning.
  • Knowledge of trust, bias, and ethics in AI.
  • Strong creative and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with big data, data visualization, and computational thinking.
  • Proficiency in data wrangling and preprocessing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Influence and collaboration skills, with a focus on cross-group teamwork.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and data-driven decision making.
  • Typically 9+ years of relevant experience and/or certification in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Industry expertise and recognition as a technical thought leader for innovation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data modeling and predictive analytics.
  • Familiarity with legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements related to AI.
  • Experience in financial services or banking industry.

Qualifications

  • Typically 9+ years of relevant experience and/or certification in a related field.
  • Formal education or certification in data science, AI, or related disciplines.
