About the Role

The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan is seeking a Director of Marketing to be a strategic and collaborative leader responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive marketing strategies that advance the mission, vision, and goals of the organization. This person will lead a talented team to elevate the Alumni Association's brand, engage U-M alumni worldwide, and support the success of programs and initiatives. The role emphasizes core values such as being all in, serving heart, and solution seeker, fostering a culture of trust, passion, collaboration, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the planning, creation, development, socialization, execution, and reporting of integrated marketing strategies that support Alumni Association brand, program goals, and objectives.
  • Oversee the marketing budget and be financially responsible for Alumni Association and MarCom resources by managing monthly spending, forecasting, and stewarding, and assist MarCom leadership with budget planning and tracking.
  • Manage portfolio strategy, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, assigning work, setting goals and objectives, and ensuring alignment with Alumni Association and program objectives.
  • Ensure all marketing efforts are consistent with the Alumni Association brand and focused on program and development goals.
  • Ensure campaigns and initiatives are integrated, cohesive, compelling, effective, consistent across platforms, and deliver a strong ROI.
  • Refine and optimize standards and processes to ensure productivity, quality, transparency, and stakeholder satisfaction across all marketing activities.
  • Advocate for and support professional and technical development of marketing staff.
  • Develop a deep understanding of target audiences, identify segment trends and opportunities, and ensure strategies effectively reach each segment.
  • Monitor industry trends and best practices, make strategic recommendations, and implement procedural changes.
  • Develop and cultivate collaborative relationships with programs and campus partners, and support staff development by raising awareness about the brand and marketing strategies.
  • Support University Relations efforts by demonstrating AAUM value to campus units/partners.
  • Build digital skill sets and incorporate into work, participate in team meetings, alumni events, and staff retreats, and support the Alumni Association's vision of creating a place of belonging for all alumni.
  • Provide organizational leadership by demonstrating AAUM core values and working collaboratively with staff and teams.
  • Support the Alumni Association's Board of Directors, committees, and volunteers, and coordinate special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in university committees and share knowledge through internal communication.
  • Remain current with technology and educational resources, and support staff in professional development.

Requirements

  • 8-10 years of marketing experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated successful experience creating and executing marketing campaigns through various channels.
  • Experience supervising marketing professionals and leading high-performing teams.
  • Ability to develop strategic, data-driven marketing plans and analyze trends to improve membership value.
  • Proactive with a can-do attitude, managing projects and teams as an enterprise leader with entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Strong project management skills from concept to completion.
  • Partnership skills to develop internal and external relationships with vendors and partners.
  • Passion for building digital skill sets and staying current with technology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving presentations and providing direction.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and diverse environment.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Understanding of marketing ROI models and campaign effectiveness measurement.
  • Experience with project management software, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Salesforce, and marketing cloud.
  • Knowledge of managing paid media including digital, direct mail, radio, etc.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for events and programs.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Salesforce and marketing cloud.
  • Experience with primary elements of paid mixed media including digital, direct mail, radio, etc.
  • Experience in higher education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in marketing, communications, or a related field (implied by experience requirements).
