About the Role

The Business Development Transactions Executive Director at Biogen will be an individual contributor and leader of a team responsible for evaluating, structuring, negotiating, and executing impactful business development opportunities across therapeutic areas, asset stages, and deal types including R&D or commercial partnerships, licenses, collaborations, and acquisitions. This role involves serving on the Business Development and New Ventures Leadership Team, executing strategic transactions such as equity investments, build-to-buy deals, and NewCo formation, and aligning these activities with Biogen's overall corporate strategy and product portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close large strategic M&A, BD&L, and New Ventures transactions that align with the company's global strategic growth initiatives.
  • Lead and shape due diligence from NBO to signing, advancing deals of the highest risk and complexity, and develop scenarios and recommendations for external opportunities.
  • Provide thought leadership and collaborate with the Corporate Development organization to build strong deal teams.
  • Drive execution of opportunities and influence cross-functional recommendations to prioritize or halt opportunities.
  • Negotiate complex deals on behalf of Biogen under applicable policies and regulations.
  • Lead transaction contracting processes and serve as a business partner to legal, finance, tax, and accounting functions.
  • Independently lead execution of complex opportunities, integrating data and providing clear recommendations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to identify external growth opportunities in multiple therapeutic areas.
  • Shape the pipeline of external growth opportunities for inbound partnering and acquisition in high-priority therapeutic areas.
  • Manage, develop, and mentor a small BD Transactions team, prioritizing assignments aligned with company and functional priorities.
  • Leverage corporate development functions and coordinate strategic planning to ensure execution of company strategy and investment priorities.
  • Drive Biogen's participation in BD-related congresses and conferences.

Requirements

  • Advanced/graduate degree required; MBA or PhD preferred.
  • 15+ years' experience in biopharma, consulting, banking, or related fields.
  • 5-10+ years' experience in Business Development or Corporate M&A.
  • Substantial deal sheet including independently leading and negotiating 10+ closed transactions.
  • Recognized expertise in deal negotiation, applicable policies, and regulations.
  • Expertise in multiple deal types including strategic M&A, BD&L, and New Ventures transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of financial evaluations and analytics, and broad understanding of legal, finance, and commercial disciplines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of drug development.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and influencing senior management decisions.
  • Ability to operate independently while guiding others and shaping multidisciplinary deal teams.
  • Experience developing top-tier talent and managing high-performing teams.
