Head of Engineering, Search Serving

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the Search Serving Platform organization to deliver low-latency, highly relevant, and reliable search experiences across all Atlassian surfaces.
• Manage and inspire a global team of engineers, guiding them to world-class engineering and operational standards.
• Drive the technical strategy for building the world's most transformative enterprise search experience.
• Work through ambiguity, craft strategy, and execute multi-quarter roadmaps for search systems.
• Build a deep understanding of business and engineering metrics to foster a culture of reliability, security, and productivity.
• Champion developer productivity and empower engineers with the right tooling at the right time.
• Hire, onboard, and retain top engineering talent while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.

Requirements

• BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of experience developing large-scale distributed systems.
• 8+ years of experience managing software development teams on large projects with complex dependencies.
• 2+ years of experience leading teams running search systems at scale.
• Excellent communication skills and experience managing managers and scaling global organizations with 50+ engineers.
• Experience working with and leading geographically distributed teams.
• Ability to define and communicate a long-term technical vision and inspire teams.
• Strong understanding of business and engineering metrics, with a focus on reliability, security, and productivity.
• Proven ability to coach and mentor team members, with strong empathy and a bias for action.
• Quick learner who thrives in ambiguous environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Experience in large-scale distributed systems and managing technical teams.
