About the Role

Airbus, through its Aerovel division and the Airbus Helicopters Flexrotor program, is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to support the development and improvement of autonomous aerial systems. The internship is based in Bingen, WA, and offers exposure to UAV operation, software design, systems integration, and flight-critical technologies. The role involves working closely with experienced engineers on projects that can be completed within 6 to 12 weeks, contributing to advanced small tactical unmanned aerial systems (STUAS) with VTOL capabilities used for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR). The environment emphasizes innovation, teamwork, and the scenic Pacific Northwest setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participating in onboarding sessions covering basic UAV system architecture, mission workflows, roles, scope of the software engineering team, and project goals.
  • Assisting in the planning and scheduling of assigned projects, including defining milestones and deliverables.
  • Developing and maintaining clear project documentation and progress reports.
  • Regularly presenting updates to mentors or supervisors.
  • Delivering final reports and presentations summarizing work, findings, and lessons learned to technical leadership.
  • Assisting with UAV software module development such as autopilot and control systems, ground control station tools, simulation, and test automation.
  • Writing scripts or tools for data analysis, system debugging, or process automation.
  • Supporting integration and testing activities, including hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop testing.
  • Contributing to software documentation and test planning.
  • Participating in code reviews and adhering to development standards.
  • Supporting system-level testing, diagnostics, low-level firmware, embedded logic, and integration of avionics, sensors, or communication interfaces.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the engineering team.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Software, Electrical, Computer, Aeronautical, or Control System Engineering (or related field).
  • Demonstrated interest in software, aviation systems, or robotics through coursework, personal projects, or previous internships.
  • Must be a US Person under ITAR definition (U.S. Citizen, green card holder, or covered under existing ITAR license).
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, or Python.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and visualization tools like MATLAB, NumPy, or pandas.
  • Familiarity with development environments for embedded systems or simulation tools.
  • Experience with scripting tools for automation or testing such as Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.

Nice to Have

  • Coursework in control systems, embedded software, or robotics.
  • Experience with UAV frameworks such as PX4 or ArduPilot.
  • Exposure to ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar middleware.
  • Experience with UAV simulation and development environments like PX4, ArduPilot, or ROS.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems development tools such as STM32Cube or Keil.
  • Experience with flight log analysis tools or telemetry decoding.
