Job Description

About the Role

The Manager Engineering Operations is the technical lead for all data center engineering operations at one or more facilities and is responsible for the direct supervision of facility and data center engineers. They report to the Manager Data Center Operations and oversee the review, approval, and implementation of SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs for the site. The role involves managing general facility operations, working with remote hands, security, and janitorial teams, and ensuring the proper operation of data center mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The manager will have experience with large-scale data centers, including electrical distribution, UPS, emergency standby generation, fire alarm/suppression, and monitoring systems, and will coordinate maintenance events to ensure reliability and high availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete understanding of facility layout, operation of MEP systems, and ability to illustrate site-specific system one-lines.
  • Review and approve SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, and execute all aspects of data center engineering including operation, maintenance, and repair of mission-critical equipment.
  • Supervise all MEP construction activity and installations, witness testing during commissioning, and validate operational documentation.
  • Develop and supervise local engineering team to ensure adherence to operational standards, maintenance schedules, and personnel efficiency.
  • Manage technical and operational incidents, including emergency response, root-cause analysis, and post-event remediation.
  • Identify operational trends, analyze risks, and develop strategies to improve system reliability and efficiency.
  • Support budget management, expense analysis, and supervision of facility services such as janitorial, landscaping, and snow removal.
  • Maintain compliance with health & safety standards, electrical and building codes, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain and track site spare parts inventory and ensure proper documentation and procedures are followed.

Requirements

  • 5 years of related facility management experience in Data Center operations or a related electrical or mechanical engineering field managing or leading data center teams in mission-critical environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • Proven experience in construction, commissioning, acceptance, and operation of mission-critical systems including electrical distribution, UPS, HVAC, generators, fire alarm/suppression, and monitoring systems.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations and associated risks.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding MEP drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC theory, energy efficiency principles, and troubleshooting site mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Experience with CMMS, DCIM, and power metering systems.
  • Demonstrated management ability in supervision, coaching, conflict resolution, and organization.
  • Ability to evaluate vendor work for quality control and improve vendor scope and procedures.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems, networking, and hardware installation requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and familiarity with Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, or AutoCad.
  • Experience assisting with budget management and expense analysis.
  • Understanding of emergency escalation processes.
