About the Role

The Manager, Marketing Automation, Content Strategy guides the direction and purpose of marketing automated communication for Western Governors University (WGU). As a leader within the Lifecycle Communications team, this role works as a strategic partner to stakeholders within the marketing team, representing the entire university. The position involves understanding content and messaging needs, developing communication strategies, and creating compelling communication journeys to engage students throughout their lifecycle. WGU is committed to expanding access to higher education through online, competency-based degree programs and fostering a diverse, student-focused workforce.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize outreach campaigns to shepherd students through meaningful communication journeys.
  • Develop and maintain reporting and analytics for team KPIs and campaigns, using data to refine and optimize campaigns.
  • Take ownership of campaign outcomes and their KPIs, ensuring measurable success.
  • Work with internal teams to A/B test and optimize customer experience and conversion rates.
  • Develop and deploy dynamic (behavior- and event-triggered) communications via email and other channels that work together as a cohesive strategy.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team and internal clients to determine and develop campaign assets that will generate the strongest results.
  • Create and optimize marketing campaigns across multiple channels (email, browser notification, SMS, others).
  • Experiment with new technologies and leverage personalization to create resonant customer journeys.
  • Manage an Email Marketing team, providing guidance, coaching, and training to team members.
  • Manage projects involving delegation of work and review of others' work products.
  • Demonstrate WGU leadership principles in service to students, employees, and partners.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 3-5 years of Content Strategy experience.
  • 3 years of leadership experience managing people and projects.
  • 2 years of Marketing Automation experience (Marketo preferred).
  • Understanding of marketing platforms including Content Management Systems, Forms, A/B Testing Solutions, Databases, Analytics.
  • Experience with Adobe Analytics is a plus but not required.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to develop effective content strategies and refine them based on outcomes.
  • Thorough understanding of customer journeys, funnels, fly-wheel methodologies, lead scoring, and automation implementation.
  • Ability to learn and communicate effectively with diverse student audiences.
  • Versatility to manage multiple projects and adapt to change.
  • Enthusiasm for improving student communication and experience.
  • Flexibility and agility to thrive in a fast-moving environment.
  • Willingness to try new solutions and identify underlying business needs.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Adobe Analytics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 3-5 years of Content Strategy experience
  • 3 years of leadership experience managing people and projects
