About the Role

UKG is seeking a seasoned technical Engineering Manager to lead a team of 8-10 engineers supporting the Payment Services Platform, including Tax, Employee Pay, and Garnishment collections and payments. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and direction for major projects, ensuring alignment with business goals and industry best practices.
  • Be hands-on with code, participating in design, architecture decisions, code reviews, and helping engineers optimize their code.
  • Ensure high standards of performance, scalability, and reliability in architecting, designing, and developing complex software systems.
  • Enforce engineering best practices such as documentation, automation, code management, and security principles.
  • Monitor and maintain the health and quality of services, proactively addressing issues using telemetry and service health indicators.
  • Play a pivotal role in the R.I.D.E. (Review, Inspect, Decide, Execute) framework.
  • Understand CI/CD pipelines from build, test, to deploy phases.
  • Lead and manage a team of software engineers, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback, and supporting professional development.
  • Foster a culture of service ownership, team engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive succession planning and engineering efficiency, focusing on quality and developer experience.
  • Guide the team on operating within a Unified Engineering model, from requirements to deployment and maintenance.
  • Grow and develop the team technically and with a quality mindset, providing actionable feedback.
  • Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of high-impact software projects, managing workload, priorities, risks, and tradeoffs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Make deployment decisions with appropriate risk mitigation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in software development, with 3+ years in a technical leadership role and 2+ years in people management.
  • Proven experience leading and delivering large-scale, complex software projects in an agile environment.
  • Deep expertise in programming languages such as C#, .NET, Python, Java, or JavaScript.
  • Extensive experience with software architecture and design patterns.
  • Strong understanding of cloud technologies like Azure, AWS, or GCP and DevOps principles.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid model, with a requirement of being in the office 3 days per week; local candidates preferred.

Nice to Have

  • Scrum master certification.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
  • Experience in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field or equivalent experience.
