About the Role

The Deputy Director serves as a department content expert in marketing and communications, utilizing specialized knowledge in operations management and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the department. The role involves strategic planning, supporting funded programs, managing staff, overseeing budgets, and maintaining quality and customer service standards. The position requires extensive contact with internal and external customers to meet program goals and objectives, with a focus on implementing strategic priorities and ensuring operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director to implement strategic priorities.
  • Manage day-to-day business operations to oversee the processes and delivery of services across programs and ensure goals are met in an effective, efficient, and timely manner.
  • Evaluate, assign, monitor, and supervise the work performance of department supervisors and participate in the selection of program staff.
  • Ensure staff are appropriately onboarded and identify the need for and participate in formulating, revising, and implementing policies and procedures of department programs.
  • Assist with writing grants, including gathering data and researching information where assigned.
  • Review and approve performance coaching actions related to performance deficiency concerns in conjunction with Human Resources.
  • Advise the Director of performance problems and seek approval for employee corrective actions up to and including termination.
  • Identify and approve training and development needs for department staff and locate appropriate training outlets.
  • Ensure department compliance with all policies and procedures, interpret and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Balance resource and priority demands to ensure sufficient staffing levels.
  • Review metrics regularly to identify opportunities for streamlining and increased efficiencies.
  • Review and approve monthly and annual quality assurance reports.
  • Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications.
  • Build customer relationships, interpret needs, and address escalated concerns.
  • Maintain positive community and public relations image of the department and organization.
  • Support the Director in developing and maintaining relationships with funding sources, donors, and community partners.
  • Provide expert guidance related to research and ensure programs utilize budgets effectively.
  • Speak and appear at related events and outreach opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree; a Ph.D. or master's degree is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience working in an environment similar to the assigned area.
  • At least 2 years of previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience in marketing, with a strong preference for candidates with agency or purpose-driven brand experience.
  • Knowledge of budget management, staffing evaluation, quality assurance, and customer service metrics.
  • Strong leadership, public speaking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to partner with other functional areas, facilitate meetings, and maintain positive relationships.
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Educational background in Communications, Marketing, Museum Studies, Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, Business, Economics, Finance, Education, or related fields.

Nice to Have

  • Experience at marketing agencies or with purpose-driven brands.
  • Experience in developing and managing omnichannel marketing programs.
  • Experience in strategic planning, campaign management, and multi-channel marketing tactics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (advanced degrees preferred).
  • Experience in a similar environment for at least 5 years.
  • Previous supervisory experience of at least 2 years.
