About the Role

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility's (ALCF) mission is to accelerate major scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs for humanity by designing and providing world-leading computing facilities in partnership with the computational science community. The ALCF helps researchers solve some of the world's largest and most complex problems with its unique combination of supercomputing resources and computational science expertise. This postdoctoral position focuses on data management for AI applications at scale, working within the AL/ML group on state-of-the-art data management, machine learning, and statistics techniques, leveraging exascale supercomputing systems and novel AI hardware to address real-world scientific problems across various disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Work on development and scaling of data infrastructure and software for AI applications on supercomputing systems and AI testbed systems.
Research and develop multimodal data management strategies for science applications, focusing on integrating, organizing, and analyzing diverse data types to accelerate scientific discovery.
Leverage Aurora's storage system, DAOS, a Distributed Asynchronous Object Storage system, to meet the needs of AI-driven applications.
Evaluate vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques on supercomputers to support AI fine-tuning and inference applications.
Work with diverse applications and systems, including object stores, memory-X, and filesystems, to evaluate, profile, and optimize AI applications at scale.
Assist in designing future systems and data-management solutions to meet application needs.
Prototype, benchmark, and evaluate strategies to support AI workloads such as training, fine-tuning, and inference at scale.

Requirements

A recent PhD (within 5 years) in computer science, computational science, physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Experience programming in one or more languages such as Python, C/C++.
Experience with AI frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Nice to Have

Experience with MPI on supercomputers.
Experience in writing technical papers and presentations.
Ability to create, maintain, and support high-quality software.
Experience with version control software such as git.

Qualifications

PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline obtained within the last 5 years.
