About the Role

We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, focusing on the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems for various spaceflight applications. The position involves developing and verifying avionics software components on Blue Origin rocket engines, with an emphasis on safety-critical embedded systems that monitor and control autonomous rocket engines. The role requires applying technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to quality to support safe human spaceflight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and test real-time embedded software that controls rocket engines for human-capable spacecraft.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams throughout all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including requirements development, architecture and design, coding, testing, integration, and maintenance.
  • Participate deeply in developing verifiable requirements, defining software architecture, writing planning specifications, assessing software integration, and resolving issues.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree or higher in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience developing and testing real-time embedded systems, including bare metal, RTOS, or Linux kernel experience.
  • Experience writing software requirements and embedded software architecture and design.
  • Proficiency with C/C++ and Python.
  • Strong debugging skills at the software/hardware boundary.
  • Experience with device drivers, serial communications, networking protocols (TCP/IP), and designing robust APIs.
  • Experience with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Verification & Validation, and tools like git, JIRA, Confluence.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical, fault-tolerant systems, and standards such as DO-178 or NPR7150.
  • Ability to learn quickly, multitask, and drive tasks to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills to present technical concepts to peers and leadership.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with embedded avionics software or engine controller software for air-breathing or rocket engines.
  • Experience in design, development, and testing of safety-critical software systems.
  • Experience with Test & Integration.
  • Ability to generate innovative reusable solutions.
  • Familiarity with Rust.
  • Experience with UML or similar modeling tools.
