About the Role

The International Personalization team at Walmart powers layout personalization, personalized recommendations, and banner personalization across multiple touchpoints within the Walmart app and website. They are a global team dedicated to helping millions of customers worldwide find better products and build trusted partnerships. The team works with state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to better infer the types of products customers should engage with, utilizing the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to incorporate vast world knowledge and Walmart data for a more engaging, personalized shopping experience. The role of the Senior Data Scientist is pivotal in revolutionizing the future of personalization in e-commerce by deploying production-ready ML models and generating insightful data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest machine learning and deep learning algorithms (Transformers, Multi-modal models) that power Personalization and Recommendations on Walmart, involving complex statistics, probability, and optimization methods.
  • Utilize pre-trained embedding models such as T5, CLIP, Bert, and RoBERTa, and apply them to customer understanding and product recommendations.
  • Stay proficient with big data technologies such as Hive, Spark, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), VertexAI, and Map-Reduce framework, and develop algorithms to handle massive web-generated data for data-driven inferences.
  • Stay updated with data science and software engineering technologies used within the team, including Java, Hive, Map-Reduce, Python, Bash scripting, and machine learning packages like Scikit-Learn, Numpy, PyTorch, XGBoost, NLTK, and GenSim.
  • Leverage data visualization tools such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, and GGplot to showcase results.
  • Apply best practices for model testing and tuning to assess accuracy and fit for data science models, including techniques like Chi square, F1, ROC curve, and root mean square error.
  • Work with agile scrum teams and adhere to software development best practices such as coding styles, peer code reviews, continuous integration with Jenkins, and deployment with OneOps.
  • Research and innovate to develop new machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques when existing methods do not meet business objectives.
  • Utilize Large Language Models and productionalize them at industry scale.
  • Move-fast and break-fast using AI-assisted code (e.g., Copilot) to test numerous hypotheses.

Requirements

  • MS/PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience in machine learning or data science.
  • Deep background in NLP, Search Science, Recommendation Systems, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Optimization, and Software development.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, PySpark, and big data processing systems in cloud environments.
  • Experience building ML models or delivering impactful customer-facing products as a tech lead and mentoring early-career data scientists.
  • Experience with pre-trained embedding models such as T5, CLIP, Bert, and RoBERTa.
  • Experience in data visualization tools like Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, and GGplot.
  • Expertise in model assessment and validation techniques.

Nice to Have

  • Publication record in peer-reviewed conferences and journals or patent filings.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences and knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
  • Experience with open source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and Torch.
  • Successful completion of assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.

Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with 3 years of experience.
  • Option 2: Master’s degree in the same fields with 1 year of experience.
  • Option 3: 5 years of experience in analytics or related field.
