About the Role

The Senior Software Engineer (Backend) role involves working in empowered, multidisciplinary teams to develop secure, scalable, and maintainable backend systems that enhance the customer experience and support FanDuel's growing community of players.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own parts of product and technology, striving to become a subject matter expert.
  • Design software or systems required in your area of ownership and ensure they meet their design objectives.
  • Provide quality feedback on designs written by other team members, asking insightful questions to improve solutions.
  • Debug cross-module issues effectively and quickly, leveraging deep knowledge of libraries, platforms, and systems.
  • Write simple, extendable, and well-tested code following standards and best practices.
  • Create coherent designs with multiple components interacting across API or system boundaries, ensuring no bugs at boundaries due to mismatches.
  • Reliably roll out components or major features, including monitoring, paging, and understanding failure domains.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, team planning, and support ticket reviews to help evolve team processes.
  • Take on projects and implement software enhancements to improve team software and processes.
  • Resolve root causes of complex problems, leaving software more maintainable.
  • Estimate stories/tasks accurately and deliver on time.
  • Stay up to date with industry tools, utilities, and open-source frameworks.
  • Participate in the interview process and help train other Software Engineers.
  • Contribute to on-call support rotation for your organization.
  • Maintain humility, pragmatism, self-management, and a continuous learning mindset.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Experience and passion for building highly scalable, fault-tolerant backend systems and APIs using Java or similar Object-Oriented languages.
  • Good understanding of relational and non-relational databases, messaging queues, and handling concurrency.
  • Knowledge of modern architectures, design patterns, and platform nuances.
  • Experience with release process best practices for APIs and services in production.
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
  • Understanding of containers (e.g., Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Expertise in testing concepts, tools, and integrating testing into the SDLC.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with defining infrastructure as code using Terraform or similar.
  • Experience with AWS cloud-based infrastructure and technologies.
  • Knowledge of containers and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
