Job Description

About the Role

We are building a first party, privacy centric advertising platform that unites retail data, smart TV inventory, and a growing CTV publisher network. Our mission is to deliver relevant, measurable ad experiences while giving consumers full control of their data. The team at Walmart's Advertising Technology group enables the connection between supplier brands and retail shoppers at unprecedented scale, working with high-performance ad servers, cutting-edge machine learning, data mining, and optimization algorithms to solve sophisticated, high-impact problems. We focus on delivering experiences that our customers and advertisers love.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and scale low-latency services that power server-side ad insertion (SSAI), dynamic ad decisioning, and real-time measurement across millions of smart TVs and OTT devices.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, privacy engineers, and DSP/SSP partners to create an end-to-end stack that bridges broadcast-quality video with programmatic precision.
  • Develop microservices for ad selection, pacing, and frequency capping that handle over 100k QPS.
  • Implement VAST4.x / VAST4.2, SCTE-35 cue-tone parsing, and OpenRTB2.6 bid request/response logic for CTV.
  • Build and optimize HLS/DASH manifest manipulation and stitched-segment workflows using cloud media services.
  • Ensure frame-accurate ad breaks and seamless transitions across HDR, 4K, and variable-bitrate profiles.
  • Integrate IAB OM SDK-CTV signals, ACR fingerprints, and privacy-preserving identifiers to attribute outcomes in real time.
  • Partner with the privacy team to apply differential privacy, on-device ML models, and clean-room pipelines for closed-loop ROAS measurement.
  • Build APIs for header-bidding adapters, Prebid.js/PrebidServer for CTV, and custom RTB auctions supporting deal IDs, first-party audiences, and dynamic floors.
  • Work with supply-side and demand-side partners to certify integrations and troubleshoot bid stream anomalies.
  • Automate rollouts via Kubernetes and GitOps, enforce canary releases and blue/green deployments.
  • Instrument distributed tracing, anomaly detection, and SLA dashboards to guarantee high uptime during live events.
  • Translate product requirements into engineering design documents, influence architecture decisions, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Contribute to open-source AdTech projects and represent the company in industry working groups.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of back-end software development experience (Golang, Java, Kotlin, C++, or Rust) with production services at scale.
  • Deep knowledge of video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH, CMAF) and ad-serving standards (VAST, VPAID, VMAP, SCTE-35).
  • Hands-on experience with programmatic advertising (OpenRTB, header bidding, DSP/SSP APIs) and real-time bidding pipelines.
  • Proficiency in cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS/GKE), and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, distributed systems, and performance tuning for millisecond-level latency.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

  • Prior work on CTV or OTT platforms (Roku, FireTV, AndroidTV, Tizen, webOS) and device-level SDKs.
  • Experience with SSAI vendors (e.g., Yospace, StreamStitcher) or building in-house manifest conditioners.
  • Familiarity with privacy-enhancing technologies such as Private Set Intersection (PSI), Differential Privacy, Federated Learning.
  • Exposure to data pipelines (Kafka, Flink, Beam) and real-time analytics (Druid, ClickHouse, BigQuery).
  • Contributions to IAB/IETF standards or open-source AdTech projects.
  • Master's degree in a technical field.

Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in a related technical field and 2 years' experience.
  • Additional: Knowledge of creating accessible digital experiences, implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and inclusive design practices.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive salary with additional compensation including annual or quarterly performance bonuses and stock options.
  • Health benefits including medical, vision, and dental coverage.
  • Financial benefits such as 401(k), stock purchase plans, and company-paid life insurance.
  • Paid time off including PTO, sick leave, parental leave, family care leave, bereavement, jury duty, and voting.
  • Other benefits like short-term and long-term disability, company discounts, Military Leave Pay, adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement.
  • Live Better U education benefit program covering tuition, books, and fees.
  • Flexible hybrid work schedule.

Working at Walmart

We are a highly motivated, agile team of engineers and data scientists focused on solving high-impact problems with cutting-edge technology. Our culture emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and delivering experiences that customers and advertisers love. We value creating inclusive digital experiences and supporting an inclusive culture through accessibility standards and best practices.
