About the Role

The Site Engineer II position is a contributing member to the site level Data Center Operations team assigned to one or more of Digital Realty's data center properties, reporting directly to the Manager Engineering Operations. The role involves supporting mission critical infrastructure, including generators, UPS systems, HVAC, fire/life safety, BMS, and CMMS systems. It requires expertise in electrical or mechanical work and aims to ensure high availability and compliance of data center operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gain a complete understanding of facility layout, operation of MEP systems, and illustrate site-specific system one-lines with accuracy.
  • Understand equipment nomenclature standards, equipment locations, facility drawings, and equipment specifications.
  • Learn equipment sequence of operations (SOOs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency operating procedures (EOPs).
  • Comprehend customer SLAs and lease obligations critical to data center operations.
  • Familiarize with the facility's top 20 EOPs and BMS alarm functionality, escalation, and data extraction.
  • Follow DLR event management, escalation, and incident reporting procedures.
  • Use CMMS to create, edit, implement, and close change management work orders.
  • Create, edit, resolve, and close incident reports following site incidents.
  • Support maintenance and operations standards, including environmental and occupational health and safety standards.
  • Understand all aspects of data center operations, including maintenance and repair of mission critical equipment to achieve 100% uptime.
  • Supervise construction activities and installations as required.
  • Execute site-specific change management processes, including creating Method of Procedures (MOPs) and overseeing maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot site mechanical and electrical systems effectively.
  • Respond to unplanned events independently.
  • Complete rounds and inspections to detect anomalies.
  • Develop or improve SOPs for site-specific equipment.
  • Gain knowledge of local customer business and data center operations.
  • Support accreditation initiatives such as SSAE16, SOC2, ISO 27001.
  • Complete DLR Critical Awareness Training.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in mission critical facilities operating/engineering or equivalent equipment experience, including assets like UPS, HVAC, generators, fire/life safety systems.
  • Hands-on electrical or mechanical skill and competence in the area of non-expertise (e.g., electrical expertise with mechanical competence, or vice versa).
  • Strong knowledge of various UPS systems and architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of cooling systems and architectures.
  • Understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations and associated risks (N+1, 2N, ATS/STS, Failover Scenarios).
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency principles.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and familiarity with Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, or AutoCad.
  • Basic understanding of emergency situations and escalation processes.
  • Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and power metering systems.
  • Ability to lift and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and stretch for placement and retrieval of equipment.
  • Ability to work under a raised data center floor and climb ladders up to 16 feet.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data center infrastructure and mission critical systems beyond minimum requirements.
  • Familiarity with additional data center management tools or certifications.
