About the Role

The New York Times is seeking a full stack Software Engineer to join the NYT Cooking team. The team focuses on developing and enhancing the cooking experience across web and mobile platforms, collaborating with design, data, product, and editorial partners to build features for responsive websites and apps on devices including web, iOS, and Android. The role involves working within a small, interdisciplinary team to create high-quality cooking experiences, reporting to the Engineering Manager of Cooking's Web team, and utilizing a tech stack that includes JavaScript (React, TypeScript, Next.js), Ruby (Rails), PostgreSQL, and GraphQL.

Key Responsibilities

Join Cooking's Web team, which owns Cooking's web product.
Collaborate with Product, SEO, Design, and other engineers across The New York Times to enhance Cooking's web user experience and improve SEO while maintaining performance and reliability.
Partner with leads to plan and estimate work, collaborating with teammates to find creative technical solutions and balancing conviction with flexibility.
Contribute to the design system and other aspects of Cooking's engineering culture.
Demonstrate support and understanding of the company's value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to the mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world.

Requirements

2+ years experience building and maintaining modern web applications.
An understanding of SEO best practices and web performance.
2+ years experience troubleshooting systems using tools such as DataDog, Sentry or similar.
2+ years experience collaborating with cross-functional partners.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud provider products and services.
Familiarity with Docker or similar containerization service.
Familiarity with using diverse AI tools to innovate and deliver high-quality code.
