We put our purpose into practice, helping people sustainably move, improve, and enjoy water, life's most essential resource. From our residential and commercial water solutions to industrial water management and everything in between, our 9,750 global employees serve customers in more than 150 countries, working to help improve lives and the environment around the world. We have an opportunity for a Senior IoT Embedded Linux Software Engineer to join our Apex, NC team. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining middleware in Go and a lightweight GUI in C or C++, running on embedded Linux systems in connected IoT devices. We are building software for real-world systems, and we need someone who balances hands-on engineering expertise with critical thinking, team collaboration, and a commitment to long-term architectural quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement IoT middleware services in the Go language, responsible for device orchestration and communication.
  • Develop a lightweight GUI using C or C++ with a UI toolkit (e.g., GTK, Qt).
  • Ensure high-quality code through Test-Driven Design (TDD) and write automated unit and integration tests.
  • Collaborate closely with team members, firmware developers, and cloud/backend teams.
  • Participate in design and code reviews, contributing to a consistent, scalable architecture.
  • Help shape internal best practices, tooling, and documentation.
  • Contribute to a team culture of mentorship, shared ownership, and mutual support.

Requirements

  • Strong experience writing Go (Golang), especially in embedded or systems-level contexts.
  • Skilled in C or C++, with experience building GUIs for embedded Linux.
  • Deep understanding of embedded Linux environments, including boot systems, system, and resource constraints.
  • Familiarity with device I/O protocols (I2C, SPI, serial), network protocols (gRPC, MQTT, HTTP), and IPC mechanisms.
  • Practical experience building testable systems and working within a test-first development mindset.
  • Experience with CI/CD, version control (Git), and modern development workflows.
  • Passionate about Test-Driven Design and building systems that are easy to test, maintain, and extend.
  • Brings a critical thinking mindset—questions assumptions and designs with a purpose.
  • Willing to collaborate actively with team members, participate in reviews, and share technical insights.
  • Values clean architecture, documentation, and modular codebases.
  • Shows an all-around willingness to help—whether it is pairing on debugging, onboarding a teammate, or refining documentation.
  • Experience with secure boot, firmware updates, and OTA infrastructure.
  • Containerized workflows on embedded platforms (e.g., Docker on ARM).
  • CI/CD Pipeline testing experience configuration using yaml.
  • Prior work with RS485 Serial communications or other similar protocol stacks.
  • Exposure to UI toolkits like Qt, LVGL, or GTK on constrained systems.
  • Open-source contributions or portfolio IoT projects.
