Job Description

About the Role

The Technical Illustrator II is responsible for creating high-quality technical graphics and illustrations to support technical manuals, user guides, training materials, and engineering documentation. This mid-level role requires proficiency in industry-standard illustration tools and a solid understanding of engineering and manufacturing processes. The role involves working closely with technical writers, engineers, and subject matter experts to visually communicate complex information in a clear, accurate, and user-friendly format.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed technical illustrations including exploded views, cutaways, schematics, wiring diagrams, flowcharts, and assembly instructions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, photographs, and technical data to produce accurate visual representations.
  • Support the development of interactive and static graphics for digital and printed documentation.
  • Ensure illustrations comply with applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and documentation style guides.
  • Collaborate with technical writers, engineers, and editors to clarify content and align graphics with written material.
  • Maintain version control and archive graphic assets in accordance with documentation lifecycle processes.
  • Assist with graphic updates and revisions based on engineering changes or user feedback.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of illustration standards, templates, and tools.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Technical Illustration, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in technical illustration or graphics production in a technical environment.
  • Proficiency with illustration and CAD software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, CorelDRAW, AutoCAD, SolidWorks Composer, or similar tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret complex technical data accurately.
  • Knowledge of engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and material specifications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or aerospace/defense programs.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-31000, S1000D, or other technical data standards.
  • Experience creating illustrations for IETMs/IETPs or other digital formats.
  • Working knowledge of 3D modeling and animation software.
