About the Role

The Director of Data Science at Walmart is responsible for leading analytics and data science initiatives to develop innovative solutions that drive business value. This role involves code development, testing, business problem formulation, data source identification, understanding business context, data visualization, analytical modeling, model assessment and validation, data strategy, and model deployment and scaling. The position requires collaboration across teams and mentoring junior associates, with a focus on creating impactful, scalable data-driven solutions that align with Walmart's strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write code to develop solutions and application features by determining appropriate programming languages and leveraging business, technical, and data requirements.
  • Create test cases, review and validate solution designs, develop proofs of concept, test code, deploy software to production, and maintain documentation and playbooks.
  • Analyze business problems within one's discipline, question assumptions, identify root causes, and recommend approaches to resolve issues with effective technology solutions.
  • Identify and select suitable data sources, perform initial data quality checks, and guide junior team members on data sourcing and quality assurance.
  • Translate business requirements into strategies, initiatives, and projects, build business cases, and measure success through key metrics.
  • Generate graphical data representations, select visualization tools, and design data stories to communicate insights effectively to stakeholders.
  • Select and develop features, conduct exploratory data analysis, apply advanced statistical and machine learning models, and interpret data trends.
  • Conduct model evaluation, testing, tuning, and validation to ensure accuracy, robustness, and fit of analytical models.
  • Understand and apply data management, quality standards, and governance principles to unlock data value and inform data strategy.
  • Deploy models, monitor their performance, and support their ongoing maintenance and scalability.
  • Lead and develop high-performing teams, foster an inclusive culture, and build internal and external partnerships to achieve business goals.
  • Promote integrity, ethics, and compliance, act as a servant leader, and ensure teams adhere to Walmart’s values and policies.
  • Deliver business results with a customer-first approach, continuously seek improvements, and support digital transformation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 6 years' experience in an analytics-related role.
  • Or Master's degree in the same fields with 4 years' experience in analytics.
  • Or 8 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
  • Knowledge of coding languages such as SQL, Java, C, Python, and testing methods including static and dynamic analysis.
  • Experience with big data analytics, automation techniques, and business domain understanding.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools like Python libraries (e.g., Matplotlib, Plotly), Tableau, PowerBI.
  • Understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and advanced analytical techniques.
  • Experience with model validation, tuning, and deployment, including model lifecycle management.
  • Knowledge of data ecosystems, data management, quality standards, and governance.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders.

Nice to Have

  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics.
  • Experience with open source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch.
  • Background in creating accessible digital experiences and knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
  • Supervisory experience and ability to lead teams.
  • Experience with creating inclusive digital products and supporting an inclusive culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in relevant fields with specified years of experience, or 8 years' experience in analytics.
