About the Role

The Senior Manager, Data Science at Walmart plays an integral role in shaping the future of retail, tech, merchandising, finance, and other industries by leveraging advanced analytics, machine learning, and data-driven solutions. The position involves developing and deploying models, guiding teams on technical and business insights, and contributing to Walmart's mission of helping people save money so they can live better. Key Responsibilities

  • Model assessment and validation, including knowledge of model fit testing, tuning, and validation techniques such as Chi square, ROC curve, root mean square error, and understanding the impact of variables on model performance.
  • Applying best practice techniques for model testing and tuning to assess accuracy, fit, validity, and robustness for multistage models and model ensembles.
  • Generating appropriate graphical representations of data and model outcomes, understanding customer requirements, and designing data visualizations for multiple data sets.
  • Guiding and mentoring junior associates on story types, structures, and visualization techniques based on context.
  • Understanding business context across multiple domains such as product, finance, marketing, sales, technology, and HR to provide actionable recommendations.
  • Conducting exploratory data analysis, selecting modeling techniques, and developing features iteratively based on model responses.
  • Deploying models to production, monitoring their behavior, and making necessary modifications based on scale and performance metrics.
  • Writing code in languages like SQL, Python, R, Java, and C; creating test cases, proofs of concept, and deploying solutions.
  • Analyzing business problems, identifying root causes, and recommending technology-focused solutions aligned with business strategy.
  • Identifying and sourcing relevant data, performing initial data quality checks, and guiding data strategy to maximize data value.
  • Driving execution of multiple business plans, developing and communicating strategies, removing barriers, and supporting continuous learning.
  • Building strong relationships with team members and stakeholders, fostering a culture of respect, integrity, and collaboration.
  • Promoting and supporting Walmart’s policies, ethical standards, and a culture of inclusion and belonging.

Requirements

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2: Master's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 3: 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
  • Knowledge of model evaluation metrics, visualization tools (Python, R libraries, Tableau, PowerBI), and advanced visualization techniques.
  • Experience with statistical and machine learning models such as Bayesian inference, NLP, neural networks, SVM, Random Forest, and auto ML.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like SQL, Python, R, Java, C, and familiarity with testing methods and deployment processes.
  • Understanding of business domain factors, data sourcing, data quality, and data management strategies.
  • Ability to interpret complex data, develop models, and translate insights into actionable business recommendations.

Nice to Have

  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models, PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics.
  • Successful completion of assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with open source frameworks like scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch.
  • Knowledge of creating accessible digital experiences and implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in relevant fields or equivalent experience as specified.
