Job Description

About the Role

ECS is seeking a 3D Computer Graphics Artist to support the development and lifecycle support of game engine-based 3D virtual training products used in the naval nuclear propulsion program. The role involves collaborating with engineers and subject matter experts to create interactive training applications, graphics, and models, primarily in an office environment at the FMP site in West Milton, NY, or West Mifflin, PA. An active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) “L” Access Authorization or a DOD “Secret” security clearance is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide recommendations to FMP on how to implement a game engine-based trainer.
  • Prepare 2D and 3D graphics, animations, and models.
  • Create Avatars and related animations.
  • Assist FMP with 3D model integration efforts.
  • Develop interactive training applications and Unity game engine based simulations.
  • Mentor FMP personnel in 3D model and virtual training application development.
  • Provide discrepancy report correction during and following test programs.
  • Attend regular meetings with FMP personnel to review work progress and discuss new tasks.
  • Work with game programmers and subject matter experts to generate digital graphics and animations for virtual training products.
  • Define and refine user interfaces and experiences with graphic artists, programmers, and FMP.
  • Obtain technical information and feedback from FMP and subject matter experts.
  • Support emergent work outside normal hours as required.
  • Maintain clear documentation of work efforts in databases/tracking systems.
  • Review and test work prior to submission for integrated testing and production.
  • Participate in lessons learned discussions and critique work-related issues.
  • Perform other duties related to research, development, and support of XR technologies and applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of professional digital art development experience or five (5) years of equivalent experience.
  • Active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) “L” Access Authorization or DOD “Secret” security clearance.
  • Ability to demonstrate skill proficiency through an art test.
  • Proficient in developing 2D and 3D game-ready assets including low to mid poly models, textures, and animations.
  • Experience with industry standard software such as Photoshop, 3D Studio MAX, Maya, and/or Blender.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling, texturing, unwrapping, and normal mapping.
  • Experience with texture atlases, tiling textures, and photorealistic texturing.
  • Understanding of physical-based rendering and materials.
  • Asset integration into game engines.

Nice to Have

  • Character modeling, editing, and animation.
  • Character skinning and weighting.
  • Creating models from laser scan data.
  • 2D User Interface layout and design.
  • Developing optimized game assets from CAD models.
  • Experience with Unity and/or Unreal engines.
  • Experience working on an agile development team.
  • Developing applications for Head Mounted Displays.
  • Level design and real-time lighting.
  • Sound design and implementation with FMOD.
  • Instructional design and video editing.
  • Experience with application lifecycle tools like Azure DevOps and source control tools like Git.
  • User experience design.
  • Performance profiling in Unity.
  • Developing virtual training products for the Navy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
