Job Description

About the Role

The Plain Language Coordinator for the NYS Unified Court System will be responsible for the statewide development and implementation of plain language in forms, reference materials, and web content. This role involves advocating for plain language changes, acting as a liaison with courts and outside entities, developing and editing court forms, creating training materials, and managing user testing to improve clarity and accessibility of legal documents and content.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with developing and implementing plain language initiatives across forms, reference materials, and web content.
  • Advocate for plain language changes and act as a liaison with courts, advisory committees, OCA Divisions, and outside entities regarding plain language usage.
  • Write how-to guides, create court forms, and edit existing forms to prepare them for translation.
  • Develop and implement a train-the-trainer program and create training and plain language materials for website content developers and graphic designers.
  • Create and publish Plain Language Style Guides.
  • Recruit and maintain volunteer experts to assist with plain language review and revisions.
  • Communicate with Counsel’s Office on legal questions raised.
  • Design, facilitate, and analyze user testing to evaluate plain language effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Expertise in plain language with a proven track record in project management leading new initiatives.
  • Proficiency with document creation and editing software including Microsoft Office, Foxit, and Adobe.
  • Experience working on legal forms and documents is preferred.
  • Some travel within NYS is required.
  • Minimum qualifications include either one year in the Principal Court Analyst title or a Master’s degree in Public or Business Administration with relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public or Business Administration from an accredited college or university and three years of relevant experience, or
  • One year in the Principal Court Analyst title, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Benefits & Perks

  • Salary range from $89,579 to $99,306 annually, including location pay.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
